Job description

Frontend WordPress Developer - 12 Month Contract

About Us
Universal Fans is a well‑established retail business with multiple online stores specialising in ceiling fans and ventilation products. As exclusive distributors of the rapidly growing Fanco and Claro brands, we’re expanding our digital presence and investing heavily in improving the performance and experience of our eCommerce sites.

The Role

We’re looking for a frontend WordPress developer to work onsite at our Melbourne office. This role is ideal for someone who writes clean, practical front‑end code and has a genuine understanding of how build decisions affect both user experience and search performance.

This is primarily a development role - you’ll be hands‑on in WordPress daily, building and refining components, templates, and page layouts. You’ll work closely with marketing and ecommerce stakeholders to implement improvements that drive conversion, improve site speed, and support organic search performance. UX sensibility and SEO awareness are important, but the foundation of this role is solid frontend development.

What You’ll Do
  • Build, customise, and maintain frontend components, page templates, and UI elements within WordPress
  • Work alongside the senior developer to deliver continuous site improvements across multiple eCommerce stores
  • Collaborate with the marketing team to implement conversion-focused enhancements across product pages, category pages, and checkout flows
  • Apply UX thinking to frontend build decisions - layout, spacing, hierarchy, mobile responsiveness, and interaction patterns
  • Support on-page SEO implementation including structured markup, meta data, heading hierarchy, page speed improvements, and internal linking patterns
  • Interpret analytics, heatmaps, and performance data to inform and prioritise frontend improvements
  • Ensure visual consistency and brand alignment across all sites
  • Contribute to accessibility and responsive design best practices
What We’re Looking For
  • Strong hands‑on experience building and customising within WordPress - themes, page builders, plugins, and custom components
  • Experience with WordPress page builders such as WPBakery, Elementor, Flatsome, or Gutenberg
  • Working knowledge of responsive design and mobile-first development
  • Understanding of UX principles as they apply to eCommerce, product discovery, conversion paths, usability
  • Familiarity with on-page SEO fundamentals - page structure, schema markup, Core Web Vitals, site speed optimisation
  • Ability to work cross‑functionally with marketing, ecommerce, and development teams
  • Attention to detail in both code quality and visual execution
  • Experience with WooCommerce frontend customisation (product pages, category pages, cart/checkout)
  • Familiarity with GA4, heatmapping tools (e.g. Hotjar), and CRO methodologies
  • Exposure to PHP at a template/customisation level
  • Experience with version control (Git) and modern development workflows
  • Knowledge of Core Web Vitals optimisation and page speed best practices
  • Exposure to design tools such as Figma, Adobe XD, or Photoshop for interpreting mockups
Why Join Us?

This is a hands‑on development role with real variety - you won’t be maintaining a single monolithic site but working across multiple growing eCommerce brands with a collaborative team. You’ll have genuine input into how the sites evolve, with the freedom to solve problems properly rather than apply quick fixes. If you’re a frontend developer who cares about how things perform, look, and rank, we’d love to hear from you.
