Job summary

Qantas Airways is seeking a Senior Manager – Freight Safety in Mascot, Sydney, to lead safety across Qantas Freight and JETS Transport in a dynamic, growing environment. You will drive safety performance, governance and continuous improvement, delivering standards and assurance frameworks while embedding a proactive safety culture.

You will bring 7+ years in safety leadership, tertiary safety qualifications, hands-on automation/controls experience, and strong stakeholder engagement to influence

Qualifications

• 7+ years’ experience in safety, standards or assurance leadership roles, ideally within freight, logistics, warehousing, transport, aviation or other complex operational environments
• Tertiary qualifications in a relevant safety field, e.g. Aviation, WHS, Environmental Safety or Safety Management
• Hands-on experience with automation, engineering controls, and the hierarchy of controls, and you can turn them into practical solutions on the floor.
• You will bring data, digital tools, and emerging technology to improve visibility, predict risk, inform decisions, and enable improved outcomes.
• Proven experience in strategic planning, program delivery and managing diverse business objectives
• Strong stakeholder engagement and communication skills, with the ability to inspire people to own safety, create meaningful change, and influence positive outcomes at all levels
• Deep knowledge of safety legislation, regulatory requirements and best‑practice frameworks
• Strong understanding of critical risks and critical controls
• Skilled in risk management, change management and decision‑making
• Experience in contractor and supplier management and oversight
• Strong people leadership experience
• Commitment to continuous improvement and operational excellence

Responsibilities

• Lead safety across Qantas Freight and JETS Transport in a dynamic and growing business
• Drive operational and people safety performance, safety governance and continuous improvement
• Full-time permanent position based at our head office in Mascot, Sydney
• Lead the development, implementation and continuous improvement of safety standards and assurance frameworks across Qantas Freight and JETS Transport
• Provide leadership across operational and people safety, assurance, safety governance and strategic improvement initiatives
• Embed a proactive safety culture, driving standardisation and ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements and Group Safety strategies
• Work closely with the freight leadership team and Group Safety functions to strengthen critical controls, identify emerging risks and use data-driven insights to drive continuous improvement
