Coates Cambridge is seeking a hands-on maintenance mechanic to service and repair a wide range of hire equipment in a modern workshop environment. You’ll be based at the Cambridge branch and contribute to safe, reliable equipment ready for customers.

Qualifications

• Trade qualification in mechanical, diesel or plant maintenance.
• Experience working with petrol and diesel engines is preferred.
• Strong diagnostics and preventative maintenance skills.

Responsibilities

• Perform preventative maintenance, servicing and overhauls on a range of hire equipment.
• Diagnose and repair mechanical faults quickly and safely.
• Maintain accurate service and repair records.
• Minimise downtime and support equipment availability.
• Follow Coates safety and quality standards in all tasks.
• Collaborate with operations and customer-facing teams to ensure high customer satisfaction.

Based at the Coates Cambridge branch, you’ll play a key role in keeping our hire fleet safe, reliable and ready for customers. This is a hands‑on mechanical role suited to someone who enjoys variety, teamwork and taking pride in maintaining high‑performing equipment.

What You’ll Be Doing Day To Day

Your typical day will focus on:

• Performing preventative maintenance, servicing and overhauls on a wide range of hire equipment
• Diagnosing and repairing mechanical faults efficiently and safely
• Completing and maintaining accurate service and repair records
• Working proactively to minimise operational downtime
• Ensuring all work complies with Coates safety and quality standards
• Close collaboration with operations, service and customer‑facing teams to support equipment availability and a high level of customer satisfaction

What You’ll Bring To The Role

• Relevant trade qualifications ( [e.g. Mechanical, Diesel, Plant Mechanic] )
• Experience with:
  • Petrol and diesel engines
  • Hydraulics and pneumatics
  • Basic electrical fault finding
• Current Driver’s Licence (MR or HR preferred)
• Forklift and EWP tickets (beneficial, not essential)
• Strong troubleshooting, diagnostic and preventative maintenance skills
• A safety‑first mindset and a commitment to quality work
