Job summary

Excolo. is seeking a technically strong Financial Reporting professional to join as a pivotal leader in our Sydney team. This 2IC role will support the Financial Reporting Manager, oversee a small team, and drive the integrity of reporting, regulatory submissions and technical accounting across the business.

The role offers hands‑on leadership, exposure to APRA/regulatory reporting, and opportunities to shape governance and finance operations in a leading insurance services environment.

Qualifications

  • CA or CPA qualification.
  • Demonstrated experience within Financial Reporting, ideally within the insurance or broader financial services sector.
  • Essential experience with AASB 17 / IFRS 17.
  • Strong technical accounting knowledge and understanding of Australian Accounting Standards.
  • Previous leadership experience or demonstrated capability mentoring and developing team members.
  • Exceptional stakeholder management and communication skills.
  • A proactive, solutions-focused approach with a passion for process improvement and continuous development.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the month-end and year-end financial reporting process, ensuring accurate and timely delivery of all reporting obligations.
  • Take ownership of group consolidation activities across multiple entities, ensuring completeness and accuracy of financial information.
  • Manage financial reporting hierarchies, chart of accounts structures and reporting governance frameworks.
  • Prepare and review monthly management reporting, executive reporting packs and supporting financial analysis.
  • Coordinate the preparation of annual statutory financial statements and supporting disclosures.
  • Lead the preparation and review of quarterly and annual APRA returns.
  • Provide technical accounting guidance on evolving reporting requirements and regulatory change initiatives.
  • Play a key role in the ongoing application and enhancement of AASB 17 / IFRS 17 reporting frameworks.
  • Oversee the balance sheet reconciliation process, ensuring all reconciliations are completed accurately and in accordance with internal policies.
  • Lead the coordination of interim and year-end external audit activities.
  • Lead, mentor and develop two direct reports within the Financial Reporting team.
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives across reporting processes, controls and systems.
  • Promote Finance as a trusted business partner through proactive stakeholder engagement and collaboration.

An exceptional opportunity has arisen for a technically strong Financial Reporting professional to join a leading insurance organisation in a pivotal leadership role.

Reporting directly to the Financial Reporting Manager, this position acts as the clear second-in-command within the Financial Reporting function, offering significant visibility across the business and the opportunity to influence key reporting, regulatory and technical accounting outcomes. Leading a team of two, you will play a critical role in ensuring the integrity of the organisation's financial reporting framework while partnering closely with Finance, Actuarial, Risk and senior business stakeholders.

The Role

This is a hands-on leadership position combining team management, technical accounting expertise, regulatory reporting and continuous improvement responsibilities.

Key responsibilities include:
Financial Reporting & Consolidations

  • Lead the preparation and review of quarterly and annual APRA returns.
  • Partner closely with Finance, Actuarial and Risk teams to ensure regulatory obligations are met.
  • Monitor developments in the regulatory landscape and assess reporting implications for the business.
  • Provide technical guidance on evolving reporting requirements and regulatory change initiatives.
AASB 17 / IFRS 17
  • Play a key role in the ongoing application and enhancement of AASB 17 / IFRS 17 reporting frameworks.
  • Provide technical accounting advice and interpretation on complex insurance accounting matters.
  • Support the assessment and implementation of new accounting standards and regulatory developments.
  • Prepare technical papers, impact assessments and recommendations for senior management and external auditors.
Controls, Reconciliations & Governance
  • Oversee the balance sheet reconciliation process, ensuring all reconciliations are completed accurately and in accordance with internal policies.
  • Ensure outstanding reconciliation items are investigated and resolved promptly.
  • Maintain a strong financial control environment and support ongoing governance initiatives.
  • Ensure reporting procedures and accounting activities are delivered within agreed timelines and service standards.
Audit & Stakeholder Management
  • Lead the coordination of interim and year-end external audit activities.
  • Act as a key contact for auditors, ensuring requests are managed efficiently and professionally.
  • Build strong relationships across Finance, Actuarial, Pricing, Risk and broader business functions.
  • Provide leadership and technical guidance to stakeholders on the financial implications of business initiatives and strategic projects.
Leadership & Process Improvement
  • Lead, mentor and develop two direct reports within the Financial Reporting team.
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives across reporting processes, controls and systems.
  • Partner with Finance leaders to identify opportunities to enhance efficiency, automation and best-practice finance operations.
  • Promote Finance as a trusted business partner through proactive stakeholder engagement and collaboration.
About You

To be successful in this role, you will possess:

  • CA or CPA qualification.
