Job summary

Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water seeks a technical support officer to manage equipment, infrastructure and assets across the Alligator Rivers Region and Kakadu. You will assist with field environmental monitoring and research logistics, including remote area operations and training compliance.

Qualifications

• Hold Apply First Aid certificate or be able to obtain it.
• Hold a current Coxswains licence or be able to obtain.
• Hold and maintain a manual driver’s licence and ability to drive a 4WD vehicle.
• Hold and maintain a valid Australian motor vehicle drivers licence.

Responsibilities

• Assist with maintenance and installation of 12V systems.
• Safely operate small trailer boats on inland waterways.
• Safely operate 4WD vehicles and UTVs in off-road environments.
• Service scientific equipment.
• Take and process water samples following set procedures.
• Provide logistics support to fieldwork teams, including stream gauging.
• Carry out maintenance on OSS vehicles, vessels and facilities, incl. safety checks.
• Assist with communication and consultation with local Aboriginal groups.

Job description

The Office of the Supervising Scientist (OSS) is a specialist scientific organisation within the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water (Commonwealth). We are responsible for protecting the people and environment of the Alligator Rivers Region, including Kakadu National Park, from the effects of uranium mining. We conduct environmental research and monitoring around operating and rehabilitated uranium mining sites, participate in and oversee the regulatory process and developing standards and practices for environmental protection.

The Job

To provide technical support to the Office of the Supervising Scientist, through management of equipment, infrastructure and assets, and support for environmental monitoring and research projects throughout the Alligator Rivers Region, including Kakadu National Park.

Duties include:

• Assist with maintenance and installation of 12V systems.
• Safely operate small trailer boats on in-land water ways.
• Safely operate 4wd vehicles and UTVs in an off-road environment.
• Service scientific equipment.
• Take and process water samples in accordance with set procedures.
• Provide logistical support to scientific staff undertaking fieldwork, including stream gauging.
• Undertake various maintenance tasks on OSS vehicles, vessels and facilities; including vehicle cleaning and routine safety inspections.
• Assist in communication and consultation activities with local Aboriginal groups.

Additional requirements

• Hold a current Apply First Aid Certificate or have the ability to obtain this qualification.
• Hold a current coxswains licence or have the ability to obtain.
• Hold and maintain a current manual driver’s licence and ability to drive a 4WD vehicle.
• Hold and maintain a valid Australian motor vehicle drivers licence.
• Note that relocation assistance is subject to negotiation.
• Note that the physical requirements of the role(s) involve a combination of outdoor and office-based work.
• Note that you will be required to complete specific training (including refresher training) related to the role including remote area training, defensive driving, first aid and CPR courses.
• Note that you will be required to travel in remote/isolated locations in northern Australia or its near northern neighbours, using a variety of transport including vessels, light/commercial aircraft, helicopters and manual four wheel drive vehicles.
• Note that you will be required, from time to time, to work in difficult, remote and harsh environments (possibly for extended periods) under limited supervision or in teams.
• Wear an official uniform supplied by the department, including during field operations (as applicable), in accordance with the department’s uniform policy.
• Wear appropriate protective personal equipment and clothing to comply with departmental Work Health & Safety policies and procedures.
