Hastings Deering (Australia) Ltd is seeking an experienced Field Service Foreman – Marine & Power Generation in Cairns. You will lead a Marine Field Service team, supervise technicians, and coordinate maintenance, diagnostics, repairs, and commissioning across Far North Queensland.

The role demands strong leadership, diagnostic expertise, and a safety‑first approach to deliver high‑quality service to marine engines and power systems while working closely with customers and operations teams.

Qualifications

  • Trade qualification as a Diesel Fitter, Marine Technician, or Mechanical Fitter.
  • Significant field service experience in marine, heavy equipment, or power systems.
  • Proven supervisory/foreman experience with team leadership.
  • Strong fault-finding and diagnostic skills across diesel engines and electrical systems.
  • Excellent planning, communication, and customer-facing abilities.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and mentor the marine field service team with safety and quality at the forefront.
  • Coordinate daily service activities, scheduling, and resource allocation.
  • Provide technical guidance on diagnostics, repairs, and commissioning.
  • Ensure work is completed safely, on time, and within budget.
  • Foster strong customer partnerships and professional stakeholder management.
  • Maintain compliance with Caterpillar, Hastings Deering, and site procedures.
  • Support regional operations and travel as required.

We are currently seeking an experience and motivated Field Service Foreman – Marine & Power Generation to join our Cairns Operations and lead our Marine Field Service team. As the Field Service Foreman, you will be responsible for supervising and coordinating a team of technicians providing maintenance, diagnostics, repairs, and commissioning support for marine and power generation equipment across Far North Queensland. Working closely with customers, service teams, and operational leaders, you will ensure work is completed safely, efficiently, and to the high standards expected of Hastings Deering and Caterpillar. This is a permanent, Monday to Friday roster opportunity to offering job stability and excellent work-life balance.

What you’ll be doing:
  • Lead and mentor the marine field service team – provide day-to-day leadership, coaching, and technical support to a team of Marine Field Service Technicians, fostering a high-performing culture focused on safety, quality, and customer service.
  • Coordinate marine field operations – oversee daily service activities, labour allocation, and job scheduling to ensure efficient utilisation of resources and timely delivery of customer commitments.
  • Provide technical leadership – support technicians with advanced diagnostics, troubleshooting, and repairs across Caterpillar marine engines, generators, and associated vessel systems.
  • Deliver safe and efficient outcomes – ensure all maintenance and repair activities are completed safely, on schedule, and within budget while maintaining the highest standards of workmanship.
  • Build strong customer partnerships – maintain proactive communication with vessel operators and marine customers, delivering exceptional service experiences and long‑term customer value.
  • Maintain quality and compliance standards – conduct quality inspections and oversee service delivery to ensure all work meets Caterpillar, Hastings Deering, and customer requirements.
  • Develop team capability – manage employee performance, support career development, and contribute to succession planning initiatives that strengthen future workforce capability.
  • Champion a safety-first culture – promote safe work practices and ensure compliance with all health, safety, environmental, and customer site procedures and policies.
  • Drive operational excellence – contribute to operational planning, performance reporting, and continuous improvement initiatives that enhance team productivity, service performance, and customer outcomes.
What you’ll need:
  • Bring a strong technical foundation – hold a trade qualification as a Diesel Fitter, Marine Technician, Mechanical Fitter, or equivalent, with proven hands‑on experience in maintaining and repairing heavy equipment or marine assets.
  • Demonstrate industry experience – possess a solid background within the marine, heavy equipment, power systems, or related industries, with exposure to field service operations and customer‑facing environments.
  • Lead with confidence – have demonstrated success in a supervisory, leading hand, or foreman role, with the ability to motivate teams, drive performance, and foster a positive workplace culture.
  • Apply advanced diagnostic skills – utilise strong fault‑finding and troubleshooting capabilities across diesel engines, power systems, and associated mechanical and electrical components.
  • Plan and organise effectively – manage competing priorities, coordinate resources, and maintain a high level of attention to detail in a fast‑paced service environment.
  • Communicate and collaborate – build strong relationships with customers, technicians, and internal stakeholders through effective communication and professional stakeholder management.
  • Commit to safety and excellence – demonstrate a genuine commitment to workplace safety, continuous improvement, and delivering high‑quality service outcomes.
  • Hold a current driver’s licence – maintain a valid driver’s licence with the ability to travel to customer sites and support regional operations as required.
  • Embrace field‑based work – be willing and able to travel throughout the region and work across diverse marine environments, including ports, shipyards, and onboard vessels.
Desirable:
  • Experience with Caterpillar Marine products – previous exposure to Caterpillar marine engines, propulsion systems, and marine power solutions will be highly regarded.
  • Knowledge of marine vessel systems – familiarity with marine propulsion, auxiliary equipment, and onboard power generation systems will support success in the role.
  • Remote and field service experience – experience working in remote locations or field service environments, with the ability to adapt to changing customer and operational requirements.
