Job summary

Smiths Detection is seeking a hands-on Field Service Engineer to join our service team and support X-ray and trace detection equipment across Australia. Applicants must be Australian citizens or permanent residents and able to obtain security clearances.

The role involves troubleshooting, maintenance, and on-site/remote support, with travel across metropolitan, regional and remote sites. A technical qualification and 3+ years in field service are required.

Qualifications

• Certificate III Trade Qualification or Degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Electronic Engineering, Mechatronics, IT, or a related discipline.
• Minimum 3 years' experience in field service, maintenance, technical support, or a similar hands-on engineering environment.
• Strong fault-finding and troubleshooting skills across mechanical and electrical systems.
• Comfortable working with hand tools, power tools, laptops and diagnostic equipment.
• Strong customer service and communication skills.

Responsibilities

• Service, troubleshoot, maintain and repair X-ray and trace detection systems at customer sites.
• Perform preventative and corrective maintenance activities in line with service agreements.
• Diagnose mechanical, electrical and electronic faults using testing equipment and software tools.
• Replace and repair components including motors, belts, rollers, sensors and other mechanical assemblies.
• Install and commission new equipment at customer sites.
• Provide both onsite and remote technical support to customers.
• Complete service reports, maintenance records and other field documentation.
• Participate in an on-call roster to support customers outside standard business hours.
• Travel extensively across metropolitan, regional and remote locations, including overnight stays when required.
• Work closely with customers, subcontractors and internal stakeholders to ensure service excellence.
• Support continuous improvement initiatives and assist with mentoring junior team members.
