Job summary

Smiths Detection Group is a global leader in threat detection and security screening technologies, seeking a hands-on Field Service Engineer to provide service, maintenance and repairs for X-ray and trace detection equipment across Australia.

This role requires Australian citizenship or permanent residency and involves extensive travel to customer sites, with on-call duties and opportunity for remote technical support and mentoring junior team members.

Qualifications

• Certificate III Trade Qualification or Degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Electronic Engineering, Mechatronics, IT, or a related discipline.
• Australian Citizen or Permanent Resident.
• Minimum 3 years' experience in field service, maintenance, technical support, or a similar hands-on engineering environment.
• Strong fault-finding and troubleshooting skills across mechanical and electrical systems.
• Comfortable working with hand tools, power tools, laptops and diagnostic equipment.
• Strong customer service and communication skills.
• Ability to work independently and manage competing priorities.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.
• Current Australian driver's licence.
• Ability to obtain required security clearances and industry licences.

Responsibilities

• Service, troubleshoot, maintain and repair X-ray and trace detection systems at customer sites.
• Perform preventative and corrective maintenance activities in line with service agreements.
• Diagnose mechanical, electrical and electronic faults using testing equipment and software tools.
• Replace and repair components including motors, belts, rollers, sensors and other mechanical assemblies.
• Install and commission new equipment at customer sites.
• Provide both onsite and remote technical support to customers.
• Complete service reports, maintenance records and other field documentation.
• Participate in an on-call roster to support customers outside standard business hours.
• Travel extensively across metropolitan, regional and remote locations, including overnight stays when required.
• Work closely with customers, subcontractors and internal stakeholders to ensure service excellence.
• Support continuous improvement initiatives and assist with mentoring junior team members.”],
