NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service in Kempsey seeks an Aboriginal Identified Field Officer to support conservation of environment and Aboriginal heritage. The role includes asset maintenance, remote-area work, and assisting visitors with safety and information.

Travelling to remote sites, you may lead projects and operate with limited supervision. Abilities to obtain MR/licences and complete required certifications within 6–12 months are essential.

  • Current Australian Class C Drivers licence with ability to obtain MR licence.
  • Certification to operate a chainsaw to level 1 crosscut standard within 12 months.
  • First Aid certificate within 6 months of commencement.
  • White Card within 6 months from commencement.

  • Respond to visitor enquiries and assist in safety and asset maintenance.

  • Ongoing full-time (35 hours per week) opportunity,
  • Located in Kempsey
  • Salary relative to experience, and ranges from $60,629 to $62,161 + super

Do you want to help support Aboriginal communities to achieve their aspirations and work to protect the state’s environment and Aboriginal heritage?

This is an Aboriginal Identified role where Aboriginal identity, cultural knowledge or connections are a genuine aspect of the role. Positions are specifically noted under the provisions of the NSW Anti-discrimination Act (1977).

About the role

National Parks and Wildlife Service has a unique opportunity for an Identified Field Officer to work as part of the team and contribute towards the conservation of the natural environment, flora, fauna and Aboriginal heritage.

It also undertakes construction, maintenance and improvements to park assets within NPWS parks and reserves, maintains heritage buildings and structures, pest, weed and fire management activities including those in remote areas and operates and maintains plant and equipment.

The role also responds to visitor enquiries and may undertake compliance activities and contributes to ensuring departmental obligations and aims are met through the enhancement and preservation of the natural and cultural heritage values of parks. Performs works programs and conducts inspections of potential safety hazards to ensure that the public has access to appropriately maintained and safe recreational facilities

About You

Your passion for your community and environment, coupled with a strong attention to detail and safety will be key to your success in this role. You'll be a strong decisionmaker with the ability to lead operations at times and solve problems in the field. You’ll enjoy working as part of a team but be able to work alone or with minimal supervision. Your fitness and enthusiasm will enable you to thrive and succeed in this diverse and dynamic role.

You will often be travelling and working in remote locations and will need to solve problems without external assistance. You will work closely with other members of the team and may be required to lead projects.

This role involves working on a rotating roster and you will be required to work on weekends and public holidays throughout the year.

Essential Requirements
  • Aboriginality in accordance with Section 14(d) of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1977 (NSW).
  • Current Australian Class C Drivers licence or equivalent.
  • Ability to obtain Medium Rigid (MR) Licence and operate MR vehicles, if required.
  • Obtain a Four-Wheel Drive (4WD) Recovery Certification (Statement of Attainment) within 6 months of commencement as arranged by NPWS with compliant providers.
  • First Aid certificate obtained within 6 months of commencement.
  • Obtain General Construction Induction card (White Card) within 6 months from commencement.
  • Certification (Statement of Attainment) to operate a chainsaw to level 1 crosscut standard obtained
  • within 12 months from commencement.
Firefighting requirements (not applicable to casual roles)
  • Applicants must meet the requirements of a firefighting medical during the recruitment process and 1-3 yearly thereafter, which is inclusive of a clearance to undertake frontline firefighting roles.
  • Following commencement in a firefighting role, Field Officers must pass the task-based physical
  • fitness assessment to a moderate level within their first 12 months of employment and annually
  • thereafter.
  • Ability to carry out frontline firefighting duties and support roles including obtain and maintain NPWS certification as a crew member, within the first 12 months of their employment.
