Job summary

About the role

National Parks and Wildlife Service has a unique opportunity for a Senior Field Officer to work as part of the team and contribute towards the conservation of the natural environment, flora, fauna and Aboriginal heritage.

As a Senior Field Officer with the National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS), you will play a key role in protecting and maintaining some of New South Wales' most significant natural and cultural landscapes. This hands‑on leadership position is responsible for coordinating and supervising field staff, contractors and volunteers in the delivery of a diverse range of operational programs, including park infrastructure maintenance, visitor facility construction, pest and weed management, fire management activities and conservation projects.

Working across dynamic and sometimes remote environments, you will lead the implementation of field programs, ensure work is delivered safely and efficiently, and contribute to the ongoing protection of natural, Aboriginal and cultural heritage values. This role offers a unique opportunity to combine practical outdoor work, team leadership and environmental stewardship while helping provide safe and memorable experiences for park visitors.

About You

We are looking for an experienced and motivated field operations professional who thrives in outdoor environments and enjoys leading teams to deliver meaningful outcomes. You will bring strong practical skills in construction, maintenance and land management, along with experience supervising staff and contractors, coordinating work programmes and maintaining a strong focus on safety, quality and environmental outcomes.

The ideal candidate is a proactive problem solver with excellent communication and organisational skills, capable of making sound decisions in the field and adapting to changing operational priorities. You are passionate about conservation, committed to protecting natural and cultural heritage, and have experience in fire management, plant and equipment operation, and delivering projects safely and effectively. Most importantly, you lead by example, support the development of others and take pride in contributing to the protection of NSW's unique national parks and reserves.

Essential requirements - As detailed in the Role Description

• Ability to work with the Department's statutory obligations as they apply to conservation of natural, Aboriginal and cultural heritage and resources, and willingness to exercise delegated authority for law enforcement.
• Demonstrated experience in the maintenance/construction of general facilities and grounds. Ability to supervise and carry out all duties safely in accordance with WH&S requirements.
• Ability to implement planned field and operational activities (including pest animal and plant control); and demonstrated skills and experience in fire management.
• Demonstrated administrative and organisational skills and capacity for working with various software programs, including ability to use the Agency's financial and asset management systems.
• Relevant WorkCover Certification, ability and experience for the appropriate operation and maintenance of machinery, plant and equipment for maintenance and construction work.
• Current Australian Class C Drivers licence or equivalent, MR Drivers Licence and ability to drive 4wd vehicles, Senior First Aid Certificate, and demonstrated ability and experience in operating MR vehicles, and willingness to fly in light aircraft.
• Certification and demonstrated ability and experience in operating chainsaw to at least cross‑cut level, and ability to operate and supervise in radio usage.

This is a physically active role suited to candidates of all genders who are fit, enjoy working outdoors as part of a team, and are eager to learn and develop the skills and qualifications needed to contribute toward improving and maintaining some of NSW's most precious natural places. Applicants must meet the requirements of a specific medical assessment, which is inclusive of a clearance to undertake the fitness test for firefighting fitness roles (i.e. moderate level Task‑Based Assessment for Firefighters) within the 12‑month probationary period, if relevant.

The role holder must obtain certification at the appropriate level prior to undertaking firefighting/incident control duties.
