Job summary

Bechtel Corporation in Weipa, QLD is seeking a field engineer to support greenfield mining projects. You will assist with work planning, material management, quantity verification, safety and quality control, and system turnover.

The role requires a bachelor’s degree and 2–9 years of relevant experience, strong knowledge of drawings, RFIs/NCRs, and a commitment to zero-accident safety. On-site work with heavy field inspection, coordination of subcontractors and timely delivery.

  • Performs Civil Field Engineering activities including inspections, audits and planning for formwork, rebar, concrete and structural steel.
  • Reviews and approves inspection test plans and coordinates subcontractor submittals.

Project Overview

The Project is a greenfield mining, process, material handling and ship loading project with a focus on sustaining production, minimise environmental impacts, strengthen long-term relationships with neighbouring communities and foster local economic development.

Job Summary

In this role, you will provide project field engineering support with work planning and packaging, material management, quantity verification and validation, safety and quality control, technical inspection and testing knowledge, and coordination of system turnover. Your work will contribute to ensuring field engineering activities operate safely, are complete, and conform to quality standards and project requirements.

Major Responsibilities
Work Planning & Packaging
  • Prepares construction drawings and sketches.
  • Interfaces in planning construction methods and procedures.
Material Management
  • Initiates requisitions for field purchases
  • Prepares quantity take-offs of field purchased material and equipment.
Quantities
  • Verifies commodities on quantity tracking systems or other computer database systems as required.
Safety / Quality Control
  • Ensures zero accident philosophy and requirements are implemented and adhered to by craft and others when in the operational area, and tools and equipment are in safe condition and operated safely.
Technical
  • Performs Civil Field Engineering activities including inspections, audits and planning to support the installation of formwork, rebar, concrete, structural steel, architectural, earthwork and performs rigging support and planning activities for material and equipment
  • Perform Field Engineering activities relating to the completion of: temporary buildings; permanent building structures, cladding and external fit-out.
  • Proactively considers continuous learning or show interest to pursue appropriate learning activities
For Direct Hire
  • Develops firm understanding of system and area scoping and drawings required for package development.
  • Reviews and approves inspection test plans
STR / Subcontract Coordinator
  • Reviews and approves inspection test plans
  • Coordinates reviews of subcontractor submittals
Education And Experience Requirements
  • Required bachelor's degree (or international equivalent) and 2-5 years of relevant experience or 6-9 years of relevant work experience
Required Knowledge And Skills
  • Understanding rebar placement drawings, steel erection drawings and architectural finish drawings.
  • Demonstrated commitment to Environment, Safety and Health (ES&H).
  • Demonstrated commitment to a Zero Accident safety program.
  • Must be computer-literate in word processing, spreadsheet and Bechtel database applications.
  • Must be familiar with current industry quality standards.
  • Knowledge of Project Technical Requests for routing and resolving Requests for Information (RFIs), Field Change Documents (FCDs), and Non Conformance/Compliance Reports (NCRs) between project sites, contractors, clients, and home office.
  • Knowledge of work packaging. Basic understanding of production management including scheduling.
  • Sound communication, interpersonal and teamwork skills.
  • Must be physically able to conduct field inspections and participate in project walk-downs which may require the following activities: extensive walking in and around a construction site, climbingladders, climbing scaffolding, usingfall protection and other personal protective equipment (PPE), walking on elevated platforms, walking on uneven surfaces, and manoeuvring around very smalland/or confined spaces.
  • Knowledge of cost management including estimating and forecast development.
