Job summary

ACT Corrective Services (ACTCS) in Canberra is seeking a Family Worker (ASO6) to support remand and sentenced detainees in maintaining and strengthening family relationships throughout their custodial journey.

You will collaborate with government agencies, community providers and detainees to deliver evidence-informed services, advocacy and practical support that respond to individual needs and reduce identified risks.

Qualifications

• Tertiary qualifications in a relevant discipline or equivalent experience is highly desirable.
• Background police checks will be conducted.
• Driver’s licence is essential.
• Pre-employment medical is required.
• Eligibility to work in Australia (citizen/permanent resident/work visa) is required.

Details: A genuinely rewarding opportunity has emerged within ACT Corrective Services (ACTCS), for a highly motivated individual to join Offender Reintegration, as a Family Worker (ASO6).

The Family Worker plays a critical role in supporting remand and sentenced detainees to maintain, strengthen and re-establish relationships with family members and other significant people throughout their custodial journey.

Working collaboratively with government agencies, community service providers, detainees and their families, the Family Worker delivers innovative, evidence-informed services that respond to individual needs, support positive outcomes and contribute to reducing identified risks.

The Family Worker provides advocacy, support and practical assistance through case management processes, helping detainees navigate personal, family and community connections. The role requires a strong commitment to culturally responsive practice, with the ability to effectively engage and support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander detainees, their families and communities.

Further to this, you will provide support to the family members impacted by having a family member incarcerated in the AMC by providing information and support around AMC processes and referring to appropriate services in the community, as required.

To be successful in this role, you will demonstrate exceptional interpersonal, organisational and communication skills necessary to build rapport and work collaboratively and respectfully with a diverse range of stakeholders.

Eligibility/Other Requirements:

• Driver’s licence is essential.
• This position requires a pre-employment medical.
• To be eligible for permanent or temporary employment within the ACT Public Service (ACTPS) you must be an Australian citizen, a permanent resident or hold a valid work visa.
• If an officer no longer holds a visa that permits them to work in Australia, their employment with the ACT Public Service (ACTPS) will be terminated.
