Job summary

Christian College Geelong seeks a capable professional for Surf Coast Campus to fill a combined Faculty Assistant and Laboratory Technician role on a 0.8 FTE, fixed-term basis from 12 October 2026 to 10 December 2027. The position supports practical learning across Science, Art, Technology & Design, and Food Technology, and requires strong organisational and technical skills.

Faculty Assistant & Laboratory Technician

Faculty Assistant & Laboratory Technician, Surf Coast Campus

We are seeking a capable and versatile individual to join our Surf Coast Campus in a unique 0.8 FTE position combining the roles of Faculty Assistant and Laboratory Technician.

This opportunity would suit someone who enjoys variety and brings both the technical laboratory capability required to support Science education and the flexibility, organisation and practical skills needed to support teaching and learning across areas such as Art, Technology & Design, Science and Food Technology.

Working closely with teaching staff, you will help ensure practical learning environments are organised, appropriately resourced, safe and ready for students to learn, explore and create.

About the Role

Position: Faculty Assistant & Laboratory Technician
Employment Type: Part Time, Fixed Term
Period of Employment: 12 October 2026 to 10 December 2027
FTE/Time Fraction: 0.8 FTE (30.4 hours per week)
Location: Surf Coast Campus, or any other Campus as required

The position comprises two distinct 0.4 FTE roles undertaken by the one employee:

• Faculty Assistant 0.4 FTE (15.2 hours per week) classified as Curriculum/Resource Services – Level 2
• Laboratory Technician 0.4 FTE (15.2hrs per week) classified as Curriculum/Resource Services – Level 3

Each component of the position will be remunerated according to the applicable classification and rate of pay, recognising the additional technical skills, qualifications and responsibilities required of the Laboratory Technician component.

The successful applicant must therefore have the skills, experience and relevant qualifications to effectively undertake both roles.

Faculty Assistant | 0.4 FTE

As Faculty Assistant, you will support practical and technical learning activities across areas including Science, Art, Technology & Design and Food Technology.

Working closely with teaching staff, you will assist with the preparation and organisation of materials and equipment, management of resources and practical learning spaces, ordering and stock control, classroom support and the safe operation of equipment and learning environments.

Laboratory Technician | 0.4 FTE

As Laboratory Technician, you will provide specialised technical support to the Science Faculty, assisting with the effective and safe delivery of practical Science learning.

You will prepare materials, solutions, equipment and practical demonstrations, maintain laboratory equipment and chemical inventories, support appropriate risk assessment processes and help ensure laboratory practices comply with relevant safety requirements.

The role requires the technical capability to support practical Science activities, including preparation across biology, chemistry, physics and general science.

Selection Criteria

To be considered for this combined position, applicants must demonstrate the capability to successfully fulfil both the Faculty Assistant and Laboratory Technician components of the role.

Please address the following criteria in your application, providing relevant examples:

• Certificate III in Laboratory Techniques or equivalent, or an equivalent qualification in Education supported by relevant laboratory experience.
• Demonstrated laboratory experience, preferably within a school or educational environment, with the technical capability to prepare materials, solutions, reagents and equipment for practical Science activities.
• Demonstrated experience or capability in supporting practical learning environments such as Science, Art, Technology & Design, Food Technology, laboratories, studios or workshops.
• Sound knowledge of laboratory safety, chemical handling, storage and disposal, risk assessment processes and relevant Occupational Health and Safety requirements.
• Demonstrated ability to safely use, maintain and support specialised equipment and to quickly learn new tools, technologies and processes.
• Strong organisational and time management skills, including the ability to coordinate competing priorities, prepare resources ahead of practical classes and maintain accurate stock and inventory records
• Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with teaching staff and provide appropriate technical and practical support to students during learning activities.
• Strong attention to detail and a proactive approach to maintaining safe, clean, organised and appropriately resourced practical learning spaces.
• Effective communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build positive working relationships with students, staff, suppliers and other members of the College community.
• Competent digital literacy and the ability to confidently use relevant administrative and technical systems and applications.
• Demonstrated initiative and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a dynamic school environment.

Experience using Pasco sensors and RiskAssess would be highly regarded.
