Job summary

WSP in Australia is seeking a Senior Civil Technician to lead the civil drafting function within our Rail, Maritime and Freight team in Western Australia. You will oversee drawing packages, set standards, allocate resources, and mentor the team to deliver complex infrastructure projects with a focus on quality and continuous improvement.

You will operate in a Perth-based role with hybrid working arrangements, drawing on extensive experience in WA civil infrastructure and familiarity with PTA

Qualifications

  • 7–15 years of Civil Technician experience in a large consultancy environment.
  • Formal qualifications in civil drafting or equivalent.
  • Strong experience across civil infrastructure projects in WA with deep understanding of WA standards (PTA Standards or similar Rail Drafting Standards).
  • Advanced proficiency in MicroStation, AutoCAD, OpenRoads, OpenRail and ProjectWise.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead quality assurance, standards development, and technical governance.
  • Effective communication, stakeholder management and coordination across multidisciplinary teams.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee the preparation, coordination, and issue of complex drawing packages, ensuring quality and consistency across outputs.
  • Act as the technical authority for drafting, setting and maintaining standards, QA processes, and best practice procedures.
  • Plan and allocate resources to meet project timelines, budgets, and deliverables.
  • Provide senior-level technical guidance and conduct detailed reviews of drawings and models.
  • Work closely with engineering leads and project managers to support integrated design delivery.
  • Drive capability uplift through mentoring and coaching of team members.
  • Support recruitment, workforce planning, and performance management within the team.
  • Champion Digital Engineering and adoption of new tools, workflows, and innovation initiatives.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement of systems, standards, and delivery processes.

This role sits within our Rail, Maritime and Freight team and will see you leading the civil drafting function across major WA projects. You will be accountable for technical quality, team performance, and continuous improvement, while supporting delivery outcomes for clients across transport and infrastructure.

What You’ll Do

As an experienced senior Civil Technician within our rail team, you will:

This is a Perth-based role with hybrid working arrangements.

About You

  • Extensive experience as a Civil Drafter, operating at Senior, Associate or Principal Technician or equivalent level – usually between 7-15 years of experience within a large consultancy environment.
  • Formal qualifications in civil drafting or equivalent.
  • Strong experience across civil infrastructure projects in WA, with deep understanding of WA standards (PTA Standards and/or similar Rail Drafting Standards).
  • Advanced proficiency in MicroStation, AutoCAD, OpenRoads, OpenRail and ProjectWise.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead quality assurance, standards development, and technical governance.
  • Effective communication, stakeholder management and coordination skills across multidisciplinary teams.
