Job summary

The Department of Employment and Workplace Relations in Hobart, TAS, seeks a Chief Counsel/First Assistant Secretary to lead the Workplace Relations Legal Division. You will provide independent legal advice to the government on workplace relations, work health and safety, and workers’ compensation matters.

The role involves steering legislative reform, guiding policy colleagues, and managing litigation involving the Minister.

Qualifications

• Mandatory law degree from an Australian tertiary institution or comparable overseas qualification.
• Admitted as a practitioner of the High Court or a Supreme Court in an Australian State or Territory.

Responsibilities

• Lead the Workplace Relations Legal Division and provide independent legal advice on workplace relations, WHS, and workers' compensation.
• Oversee legislative reform and management of litigation involving the Minister.
