Job summary

Nuix in Sydney is building a new AI engineering team focused on Nuix Neo. This leadership role owns Enrich data enrichment capabilities and guides the AI mandate across the platform, blending internal models with off-the-shelf tooling for both on-prem and SaaS deployments.

You will lead Sydney, Ukraine, and US engineers and data scientists, accountable for delivery, team health, and ways of working in a distributed setup.

Qualifications

• At least 10 years in software engineering with leadership experience.

Role Overview:

We're building a new AI engineering team in Sydney with broad scope across Nuix Neo. This role carries dual responsibility. You’ll own Enrich, our established data-enrichment capability that finds, identifies and codifies information in unstructured documents (named-entity recognition, PII extraction, document-type identification, compound lexeme and skills analysis, and more), combining our own models with off-the-shelf tooling and shipping across on-prem and SaaS. You’ll also lead the team's new and expanding AI mandate in the platform: taking on our broader AI strategy, building out agentic capabilities that will change how our customers work.

You lead this team end-to-end: Sydney engineers alongside experienced engineers and data scientists in Ukraine and the US. You are accountable for delivery across both the existing product and the new AI scope, for team health, and for the ways of working that let a distributed team ship high-quality software across on-prem and SaaS deployments. You'll partner closely with a dedicated Product Manager to shape and sequence the roadmap, and with our Architecture function to keep us moving toward target state. This is a people-leadership role for someone who is technical enough to earn the team's trust and unblock them — without sitting on the delivery critical path themselves.

This position will be based in our Sydney office. The candidate is required to attend the office a minimum of 3 days per week but may voluntarily elect to work either remotely or from the Sydney office for the remaining 2 days of the wee

Key Responsibilities

• Lead, coach and grow a cross-timezone team (Australia, Ukraine, US) — hiring, onboarding, career development, performance and day-to-day support.
• Own delivery: Partner with product managers to plan, prioritise, manage risk and dependencies, and provide predictable shipping of quality software across on-prem and SaaS.
• Partner with the Product Manager to translate strategy into a viable, sequenced roadmap; give engineering input on feasibility, effort and trade-offs for AI and agentic initiatives.
• Establish the ways of working that make a globally distributed team effective, protecting a healthy overlap between Sydney and remote members.
• Be accountable for engineering quality and security outcomes — code and vulnerability scan reports addressed continuously, secure-by-design practices upheld.
• Stay close enough to the technology to review designs, contribute to technical direction and support development — without being on the delivery critical path.

Skills, Knowledge and Expertise

• At least 10 years' experience in software engineering, with a strong hands-on foundation before moving into leadership.
• Proven engineering management experience is essential, including leading geographically distributed, cross-timezone teams.
• Any experience managing an AI / ML product development team is favourable— familiarity with the realities of shipping AI features, agents or model-backed products.
• Experience delivering products across both on-prem and SaaS/cloud (ideally Kubernetes-based) is desirable.
• Technically credible across a modern stack (Java, Python, React/TypeScript) — enough to guide design and quality conversations and give useful code-review feedback, without needing to be the strongest coder in the room.
• Strong track record in delivery management, stakeholder communication and building high-performing, healthy team cultures.
• Familiarity with document-intelligence, NLP or data-enrichment domains is a plus.
• Degree in Computer Science, Engineering or a related field, or equivalent experience.
