Job summary

James Fisher Defence (JFD), part of the James Fisher Group, seeks an Engineering Manager – Diving and Hyperbaric to lead a multidisciplinary team across the full engineering lifecycle. You will drive safe, innovative diving and hyperbaric solutions for major commercial and defence programs in a safety-critical environment.

You will oversee design, verification, certification and through-life support while managing budgets and schedules to deliver on time and within cost.

Qualifications

• Degree qualified in an engineering discipline.
• Registered with Engineers Australia (or equivalent).
• Experience leading multidisciplinary teams in subsea, defence, maritime, hyperbaric or other safety-critical environments.
• Strong understanding of design, verification, certification, and through-life engineering support.
• Knowledge of defence customer, contractual, regulatory and assurance obligations.

Responsibilities

• Lead the Engineering department in alignment with JFD strategy and regulatory frameworks.
• Drive delivery of engineering solutions prioritising safety, quality, operability, supportability and cost.
• Oversee budgets, schedules and project execution within scope, time and cost targets.
• Monitor performance with reporting, capacity planning and metrics to drive accountability.
• Provide technical leadership and mentorship, fostering safety, innovation and engineering excellence.
• Partner with Production and stakeholders to deliver cost-competitive solutions.

About the Role

Engineering Manager – Diving and Hyperbaric

The Role

As the Engineering Manager – Diving and Hyperbaric, you will be responsible for delivering safe, innovative diving and hyperbaric solutions across the full engineering lifecycle.

The role manages a multidisciplinary team, oversees technical outputs, and ensures engineering activities meet safety, quality, cost, and compliance requirements while supporting major commercial and defence projects.

What you’ll be doing

• Leading the Engineering department in alignment with JFD strategic objectives and regulatory frameworks.
• Drive the delivery of engineering solutions that achieve the highest standards of safety, quality, operability, supportability, and cost-effectiveness.
• Oversee engineering budgets, schedules, and project execution, ensuring delivery within scope, time, and cost targets.
• Monitor departmental performance, using reporting, capacity planning, and metrics to drive accountability and continuous improvement.
• Provide technical leadership and mentorship, fostering a culture of safety, innovation, and engineering excellence.
• Partner with Production and key stakeholders to deliver cost-competitive solutions through advanced manufacturing and efficient engineering practices.

What we’re looking for

• Degree qualified in a relevant engineering discipline.
• Registered with Engineers Australia (or equivalent).
• Demonstrated experience leading multidisciplinary engineering teams in subsea, Defence, maritime, hyperbaric or other safety-critical engineering environments.
• Strong understanding of product design, systems integration verification, validation, certification and through-life engineering support.
• Strong understanding of customer, contractual, regulatory and assurance obligations in a defence environment.
• Experienced in managing risk, configuration control, design reviews and engineering change.
• Experience setting and delivering medium- and long-term strategies, budgets and resource plans
• Strong leadership, communication, coaching and stakeholder management skills
• Must be eligible to obtain an Australian Government Security Clearance
