Job summary

Civica is seeking an Engineering Manager in Melbourne or Sydney to lead a team of 4–6 engineers while continuing to contribute technically. You will help the team deliver and maintain customer-facing products, solve complex technical problems and create meaningful outcomes for the citizens we serve.

In this hands-on leadership role you will drive Agile/Scrum delivery, apply strong coding and system design, and guide cloud-based SaaS development using AWS or Azure.

Qualifications

• Minimum 5–8 years of software engineering experience with leadership exposure.
• Hands-on full-stack development across backend and frontend.
• Proven experience with Agile/Scrum and working with product managers.
• Strong coding, system design and modern software engineering practices.
• Experience building cloud-based SaaS products (AWS/Azure).
• Knowledge of web/API development and DevOps/SRE basics.
• Strong stakeholder management, prioritisation and mentoring.

What you'll do

• Apply strong coding, system design and modern software engineering practices across the development lifecycle.
• Use delivery signals and metrics to guide decisions, improve ways of working and maintain quality.
• Contribute to team and product roadmaps that align with broader organisational priorities.

What you'll bring

• At least five years to 8 years of relevant software engineering experience, including a minimum of a couple of years leading a team of engineers.
• Hands-on full-stack development experience across back-end and front-end technologies, with strong programming fundamentals.
• Practical experience with Agile/Scrum delivery and working with product managers in a fast-paced environment.
• Strong knowledge of coding, system design and modern software engineering practices, including testing and automation.
• Experience building cloud-based SaaS products, ideally using AWS or Azure. Other cloud platforms will also be considered.
• Experience with web and API development, plus a working understanding of DevOps, SRE and software delivery lifecycle practices.
• Strong stakeholder management, prioritisation, coaching and mentoring skills. Exposure to AI-assisted software development is an advantage.
