Job summary

Zed Technologies in Melbourne, Australia seeks an Engineering Lead to guide two verticals—Core and R&D—balancing product stability with rapid prototyping. You will work closely with the CEO and Principal Engineer, manage people, and contribute to hands-on technical work as needed.

You will mentor engineers, champion AI-assisted coding with prudent judgment, ensure secure, well-documented code, and drive improvements in processes and tooling while maintaining regulatory and clinical risk controls.

Job description

As an Engineering Lead, you will lead the engineering team across two verticals: Core and R&D. Core keeps the existing product strong and lowers clinical and regulatory risk. R&D turns validated problems into new products. You will manage the people in both verticals and stay close to the technical work, using AI tools including AI assisted coding to move quickly. This is a step up role for a strong engineer ready to move into people leadership for the first time. You will lead the team across both verticals from the start, with technical support from the Principal Engineer, and build your depth across the product over your first few months. You will work closely with the Principal Engineer, who holds technical leadership across both verticals, and you will report to the CEO.

Key responsibilities

Lead the Core vertical to keep the existing product strong and lower risk, ensuring the product remains stable, secure, and well supported, managing tech debt so it does not slow delivery or raise risk, and making sure clinical and regulatory sensitive code is properly reviewed before release

Lead the R&D vertical to turn validated problems into new products, working AI first, building and prototyping new product ideas quickly using AI tools, validating technical feasibility before committing to a build, and working with the Principal Engineer to ensure new approaches are sound and safe to ship

Lead and grow the engineering team by managing, supporting, and developing the people in both verticals, holding regular one on ones and giving clear, timely feedback, and setting development goals with each team member

Work AI first and set the standard for the team by using AI tools including AI assisted coding to work efficiently, showing the team how to use these tools well, and keeping judgement about where AI output needs checking, especially in Core

Drive continuous improvement and technical excellence by identifying opportunities for process or tooling improvements, evaluating and recommending new technologies to improve efficiency, and refining development processes and workflows across both verticals

Maintain alignment with Zed's quality objectives and policies by understanding and applying Zed's QMS in day to day work, completing quality training tasks within required timeframes, and ensuring the team's work meets internal quality standards

Maintain alignment with Zed's cyber security objectives and policies by understanding and applying Zed's ISMS in day to day work, completing cyber security training tasks within required timeframes, and ensuring the team's work meets internal cyber security standards

Participate in regular performance reviews to evaluate personal and team contribution, prepare for and participate in annual and mid cycle performance reviews, provide constructive peer feedback when requested, and define development goals aligned with team and company objectives

About you

Strong hands on software engineering experience at a senior level, ready to step into leading people for the first time

Genuinely works AI first, with real day to day experience using AI assisted coding tools, and clear judgement about where to trust them and where to check their output

Strong background in .NET and .NET Core with SQL Server

Experience with Azure DevOps and CI/CD pipelines

Able to balance keeping an existing product stable and low risk with building and prototyping new things

Sound judgement on technical risk, especially where software touches clinical or regulatory areas

Clear communicator who works well across engineering, product, and the wider business

Wants to mentor and grow other engineers

Committed to secure, maintainable, and well documented code
