Job summary

Greater Western Water in Victoria is seeking a Process Engineer for the Southern Recycled Water Operations team. Based at the Altona Treatment Plant and supporting Melton and Bacchus Marsh plants, you will partner with experienced engineers to optimise wastewater treatment and ensure reliable service delivery.

You will analyse performance data, optimise processes, and contribute to safety, compliance and asset performance. A driver’s licence and willingness to work across sites are required.

Qualifications

  • Degree in Chemical, Mechanical, Environmental or Civil Engineering with a focus on water or process engineering.
  • Experience in wastewater treatment operations and process optimisation.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving and data interpretation skills.
  • Good understanding of wastewater treatment principles and operational challenges.
  • Familiarity with SCADA and process modelling software (BioWin/SUMO) is desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Analyse plant performance data to identify opportunities for improved treatment performance, reliability and efficiency.
  • Optimise wastewater and recycled water treatment processes using data-driven problem solving and continuous improvement.
  • Manage water quality monitoring programs and ensure regulatory compliance.
  • Use SCADA and reporting tools to generate insights and support decision-making.
  • Collaborate with teams to implement engineering solutions improving safety and asset performance.

The opportunity

The Southern Recycled Water Operations team is seeking a motivated engineer to grow their expertise and contribute to wastewater treatment operations. Based at our Altona Treatment Plant and also supporting our Melton & Bacchus Marsh Plants, you'll partner with experienced operational professionals to improve plant performance and support safe, reliable service delivery.

As Process Engineer, you'll use data, engineering knowledge and collaboration to optimise wastewater treatment systems, improve asset performance, reduce operational risks, and deliver safe, sustainable services for our customers and communities.

You will be required to work at operational sites, in a safe and effective team environment within the framework of our health, safety, environment and quality (compliance) management systems.

Work alongside experienced operators and engineers to monitor performance, solve complex process challenges and use data-driven insights to improve wastewater treatment outcomes, this is the role for you.

Responsibilities
  • Analyse plant performance data and operational trends to identify opportunities for improved treatment performance, reliability and efficiency.
  • Optimise wastewater and recycled water treatment processes through data-driven problem solving, monitoring and continuous improvement.
  • Manage water quality monitoring programs and ensure compliance with operational, environmental and regulatory requirements.
  • Use SCADA, monitoring systems and performance reporting tools to generate insights, manage risks and support operational decision-making.
  • Collaborate with operational, project and technical teams to implement engineering solutions that improve safety, compliance and asset performance.
Skills & Experience
  • Degree in Chemical, Mechanical, Environmental or Civil Engineering, with a focus on water, wastewater or process engineering, or equivalent experience.
  • Experience in wastewater treatment operations and process optimisation, including activated sludge systems, nitrification, denitrification and process performance monitoring.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving and data interpretation skills, with the ability to translate operational data into practical improvement opportunities.
  • Sound understanding of wastewater treatment principles and the ability to investigate and resolve complex technical and operational challenges.
  • Experience using operational data, process control systems and performance reporting tools; willingness to develop capability in process modelling software such as BioWin or SUMO.
  • Effective communication and stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to work collaboratively across operational teams, technical specialists and service providers.
  • Self-motivated and adaptable, with a commitment to continuous learning, innovation and operational excellence.
  • Current driver's licence and willingness to work across operational sites and participate in an after-hours incident response roster as required.
