Job description

Blacktown City Council is looking for two experienced Civil Engineers to help maintain and improve the infrastructure used by one of Australia’s fastest-growing communities.

Working within Council’s Civil Asset Maintenance team, you will manage maintenance, renewal and minor capital works across the road reserve. This includes roads, drainage, footpaths, kerb and gutter, pedestrian crossings, traffic facilities, bus stops and other public infrastructure.

You will have the autonomy to manage your own workload, develop practical solutions and see

the results of your work across the city.

The Opportunity

Reporting to the Senior Coordinator Civil Asset Maintenance and Administration, you will:

  • plan and coordinate civil maintenance, renewal and minor capital works
  • investigate infrastructure defects, customer requests and civil applications
  • undertake site inspections and develop practical engineering solutions
  • prepare project estimates, works programs, technical reports and recommendations
  • manage contractors and monitor project cost, quality, safety and delivery
  • supervise an Overseer responsible for coordinating and inspecting works onsite
  • review completed works and ensure they meet Council specifications and relevant standards
  • liaise with residents, Councillors, public authorities and internal stakeholders
  • contribute ideas that improve processes, service delivery and community outcomes.

The team works across several civil infrastructure streams, including roads, concrete assets, drainage and applications. Over time, you will gain exposure to different areas of the operation, building broader experience and supporting your future career progression.

About you

You are a practical and proactive Civil Engineer who takes ownership of your work. You can identify a problem, investigate the cause and recommend a considered solution rather than waiting to be told what to do next.

You will bring:

  • a degree in Civil Engineering or a closely related discipline
  • solid experience in civil construction, maintenance, asset management or project delivery
  • sound technical knowledge of roads and civil infrastructure
  • experience managing contractors, works programs and project quality
  • the ability to interpret or contribute to civil design solutions
  • leadership capability and experience supervising staff or coordinating site teams
  • strong time management and the ability to balance field, project and administrative responsibilities
  • a positive, customer-focused approach when working with residents and stakeholders
  • knowledge of relevant legislation, standards and workplace safety requirements
  • a current Class C driver licence.

Previous local government experience is advantageous but not essential. Candidates from councils, civil contractors, consultancies and other infrastructure organisations are encouraged to apply.

What Council offers

At Blacktown City Council, you will join an experienced and supportive team that values professional judgement, practical thinking and autonomy.

The positions offer:

  • permanent, full-time employment with one of Australia’s largest councils
  • salary commencing at $117,378.04 per year
  • an additional 3.5% Civil Liability Allowance

  • a 35-hour working week
  • access to Council’s flextime arrangement
  • a leaseback vehicle with private use, fuel, maintenance and insurance included
  • ongoing training and professional development
  • access to Fitness Passport, social clubs and wellbeing programs
  • exposure to a broad range of civil assets and opportunities to build your career
