Job description

About The Role

Shape the Future of Tasmania's Power System

TasNetworks is seeking an experienced EMS Engineer to join our Control Systems team and play a key role in the secure, reliable and efficient operation of the Tasmanian Power System.

This is a technically significant role for an engineer who enjoys working across the control systems and Operational Technology (OT) that support the power system. You’ll provide specialist expertise across the transmission network focused Energy Management System (EMS), supporting the systems and applications Network Operations rely on every day.

You’ll play a key part in the management, design, development and strategic direction of EMS models and applications, ensuring they are secure, accurate, resilient and fit for purpose. Your work will directly support real-time decision-making and the reliability of Tasmania’s electricity network.

What you’ll do

Working closely with Network Operations, Control System Engineers and other stakeholders, you’ll ensure the EMS model reflects the power system and that issues are identified and resolved quickly. You’ll also contribute to projects, operator training and the ongoing improvement of Control Systems capability.

Key Responsibilities Include
  • Building and supporting secure, reliable real-time operational systems across data, software, hardware and applications.
  • Providing technical expertise for the operation, design, augmentation and strategic direction of the EMS.
  • Leading the design, development, maintenance and implementation of EMS applications and network models.
  • Ensuring EMS reliability, recoverability, performance and accuracy.
  • Developing and maintaining supporting EMS layers, including calculations, data management, storage and interfaces.
  • Coordinating quality assurance activities to ensure the EMS model accurately reflects system conditions.
  • Diagnosing and resolving faults and incidents, including identifying causes and recommending corrective actions.
  • Working with Control System Engineers to resolve EMS data, display and advanced application issues.
  • Proactively managing system, process and data risks through to resolution.
  • Participating in an on-call roster supporting the broader Operational Systems real-time environment.
About You

You’ll have a strong background in Control Systems, SCADA, EMS and OT with a foundation in electrical power engineering. You’ll be able to demonstrate an ability to work on complex systems and be comfortable working where reliability, accuracy and rapid problem-solving are essential.

You’ll also bring software and data capability, together with strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively with engineers, operators, project teams and business stakeholders.

To Be Successful, You’ll Have
  • Tertiary qualifications in Electrical Power Engineering, or an Associate Diploma with extensive electricity industry experience.
  • Experience with Control Systems, SCADA and EMS, including power system simulators, applications, databases and user interfaces.
  • Knowledge of power system analysis and modelling principles and techniques.
  • Project management knowledge and proven project management experience.
  • The ability to work effectively in a real-time environment and resolve problems efficiently.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience working within a regulatory environment.
  • An understanding of the Tasmanian electricity system and National Electricity Rules.
  • Experience with SCADA applications and communications protocols.
  • Development experience in C, C++, C# or Python.
  • Experience retrieving and analysing historical information from SCADA databases.
  • Strong organisational skills, with the ability to manage priorities and deliver outcomes.
  • A results-oriented mindset focused on continuous improvement and customer outcomes.
  • The ability to build effective stakeholder relationships and deliver customer-focused results.
