Job summary

Worley is seeking an experienced Electrical Engineer II for a 12-month agency contractor role based in Portland, Victoria, Australia. The position supports the Alcoa project and requires delivering discipline-specific engineering services across the asset lifecycle.

The ideal candidate has 5+ years' experience in electrical engineering design, strong knowledge of Australian standards, and a track record in brownfield modifications, instrumentation interfaces, and safety-focused design.

Qualifications

  • Tertiary qualification: 4-year bachelor's in Electrical Power or Electrical Engineering.
  • Minimum 5 years' technical experience in discipline-level engineering design.
  • Experience in brownfield electrical systems modification and interfaces with instrumentation and control.
  • Excellent understanding of Australian electrical standards.
  • Strong knowledge across equipment sizing, cable routing, layouts, lighting, earthing, arc flash and HV switchgear/MCC design.
  • Experience with control interfacing and instrumentation; electrical calculations.
  • Knowledge of protection systems and relay settings (overcurrent, earth fault, motors, VSD).
  • Creation of design drawings (SLDs, schematics, terminations, schedules, layouts).
  • Site experience: scoping, inspections, commissioning; FATs/SATs witnessing.
  • Experience preparing ITPs, MTOs, datasheets, specs, procurement, and construction scope.
  • Understanding of electrical estimates, execution schedules, and shutdown planning.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver engineering services that meet Worley, client, and regulatory requirements.
  • Develop fit-for-purpose designs from concept to as-built; ensure safety and operability.
  • Leverage digital/AI-enabled tools in daily work.
  • Identify issues and provide innovative solutions with senior support.
  • Produce calculations, drawings, and documentation; interpret applicable standards.
  • Support project reviews, HAZIDs/HAZOPs, and safety-in-design workshops.
  • Coordinate with peers and clients to deliver high-quality deliverables.
  • Foster relationships with contractors, clients and Worley personnel.
  • Contribute to improving Worley engineering systems and processes.

Responsibilities
  • Deliver discipline specific engineering services that meet Worley, the client’s and applicable statutory and regulatory requirements.
  • Consider 'fit for purpose' solutions from concept through to as built is developed considering safe and sustainable design, constructability, commissioning phases, operability, maintainability and decommissioning.
  • Proactive interest in leveraging digital and AI-enabled tools in day-to-day work.
  • Understand and consider safety hazards and risks associated with the asset lifecycle of the designed product, plant or structure.
  • Identify issues and problems; develop appropriate and innovative solutions with support from seniors.
  • Perform discipline specific engineering services such as:
    • Prepare/support the production of calculations, drawings and related documentation.
    • Interpret and apply the applicable technical standards.
    • Deliver as per the scope of work, identify changes to the scope and communicate with the lead.
    • Support in project reviews, HAZIDs/HAZOPs and safety in design workshops as required.
    • Understand and support the project change management processes.
  • Ensure self-check is completed on all deliverables and ensure compliance with checking and review activities as per Worley processes.
  • Interface with other peers, seniors, engineering disciplines and Workshare team to complete engineering design and ensure delivery of high-quality deliverables
  • Establish and maintain relationships with contractors, the client and other Worley personnel.
  • Actively contribute to the development and improvement of Worley engineering systems, processes, practices, and procedures.
  • Understand and consider interdisciplinarity interfaces across design packages.
  • Tertiary qualifications with a 4-year bachelor's degree in engineering majoring in Electrical Power or Electrical Engineering.
  • Minimum 5 years technical experience undertaking engineering design at discipline level.
  • Experience in brownfield electrical systems modification detailed design and understanding of instrumentation and control system interfaces.
  • Able to work across multiple projects.
  • Experience across most phases of engineering projects.
  • Excellent understanding of Australian electrical standards.
  • Good understanding and experience in most areas of:
    • Equipment sizing, cable routing, equipment layouts, lighting design, earthing design, arc flash requirements and HV switchgear and MCC design.
    • Control system interfacing and instrumentation.
    • Electrical calculations required for design.
    • Protection systems and relay settings (overcurrent, earth fault, motors, VSDs).
    • Creation of design drawings such as SLDs, schematics, terminations, schedules, layouts.
    • Site experience such as scoping solutions, equipment inspections, construction and commissioning.
    • Witnessing and inspection of equipment during FATs, SATs.
    • Preparing ITPs, MTOs, datasheets, specifications, construction methodologies, philosophy documents, procurement requisitions and construction scope of works packages.
    • Understanding of electrical estimates and execution schedules.
    • Understanding of shutdown planning and considerations for design.
