Job summary

AECOM in Australia seeks an experienced Electrical Engineer to lead detailed electrical design for underground mining projects. You will deliver equipment layouts, 3D plant models, and coordinated drawings using AutoCAD and Navisworks within a multidisciplinary team.

Apply your expertise across the project lifecycle from concept to construction, mentor cadet designers, and ensure compliance with Australian standards and client specs in a hybrid work environment in Queensland.

Qualifications

• Formal Electrical Engineering qualification (Assoc. Diploma/Degree)
• Experience in underground hard rock mining environments preferred
• Strong 2D drafting and 3D modelling with high accuracy

Job Description

How you’ll make a difference

Join AECOM’s Resource and Industry team and become a key member in the development and delivery of a variety of interesting projects ranging from our speciality, hard rock underground mining, delivering copper and gold to the world through to transport and water infrastructure projects. You will apply your technical expertise across the full project lifecycle, from concept through to detailed design and construction support. You will be a key technical contributor within a multidisciplinary team, taking ownership of electrical designs including:-

Project Areas

• Surface and underground material handling, ventilation systems, fixed plant, and associated infrastructure typical of hard rock metalliferous mining environments
• Intelligent Transport System and Lighting designs for transport infrastructure projects
• Pump stations and water/waste-water plants for a range of water infrastructure projects

Skills

• Lead and assist with the delivery of detailed electrical designs, equipment layouts, and engineering drawings using AutoCAD, ensuring compliance with Australian Standards, Client specifications, and applicable regulations and codes
• Develop and manage 3D plant models and coordinate discipline clash detection using Navisworks or equivalent modelling tools
• An understanding of underground hard rock mining systems including ore handling (crushers, conveyor systems, ore passes, winders/hoists), dewatering, ventilation systems, workshops and fixed plant would be advantageous
• Interpret mechanical, civil, and structural interfaces to produce fully coordinated electrical designs appropriate for underground environments
• Manage and control drawing registers, model deliverables, and document workflows
• Participate in internal design reviews, checking your own and junior staff work for technical accuracy, constructability, and compliance prior to issue
• Provide technical mentorship and guidance to cadet and intermediate designers within the team
• Liaise directly with project engineers and project managers to manage design deliverables, resolve technical queries, and ensure on-time delivery
• Develop and maintain equipment libraries for electrical equipment.

Qualifications

The qualities that help you thrive

• Demonstrated ability to work autonomously on complex electrical design tasks with minimal direction from senior engineers
• Formal qualifications in Electrical Engineering at Associate Diploma or Associate Degree level will be well regarded.
• Familiarity with underground hard rock mining operations, equipment, and the practical constraints of designing for confined, remote, and hazardous environments would be advantageous
• High proficiency in 2D drafting and 3D modelling with a consistent record of low error rates and thorough self-checking
• Collaborative and communicative, with the confidence to challenge design assumptions and raise technical concerns constructively
• Minimum 5-10 years of electrical drafting and design experience in a CAD environment
• Advanced proficiency in AutoCAD experience is essential. Experience with Microstation and/or Revit would be well regarded
• Demonstrated experience producing deliverables across all design stages (Pre-Feasibility, Feasibility, Detailed Design, and Construction).
