Job summary

Onpoint 365 in Australia is seeking an EL1 Lead Data Engineer to join a federal government data team onsite in Canberra. The role focuses on building scalable geospatial data platforms in cloud environments, developing data pipelines, and ensuring secure, reliable delivery of scientific data products.

You will lead software development standards, mentor engineers, and drive automation through CI/CD and testing pipelines, while embedding security and performance improvements across projects.

Duration: 12 months, potential 6 month extension

Hourly Rate: $78-$88 per hour

Our federal government client is seeking a skilled Data Engineer to join a collaborative data and technology team supporting the delivery and maintenance of scientific data products and infrastructure capabilities.

Key Responsibilities

• Design, develop, test, validate, optimise, and document machine learning workflows.
• Support the development and maintenance of data ingestion and transformation pipelines.
• Contribute to the development, testing, and maintenance of data platform code bases.
• Provide technical guidance and knowledge transfer to stakeholders and end users.
• Identify and implement improvements to existing algorithms, systems, and processes.
• Develop, maintain, and enhance automated testing and deployment pipelines within cloud environments.
• Support the availability, performance, and reliability of systems and services.
• Embed security practices and tools into systems, software development processes, and CI/CD pipelines.
• Support ongoing data operations and administrative activities as required.
• Contribute to a collaborative, inclusive, and high-performing team culture.

About You

• Demonstrated experience working with large and complex geospatial datasets in cloud-based environments.
• Strong knowledge of data access, management, editing, and governance protocols.
• Experience providing advice and guidance on data processes, systems, tools, and best practices.
• Proven technical leadership within software development environments, including driving development standards, tools, and secure delivery practices.
• Experience with data engineering orchestration, containerisation technologies, and Python development.
• Strong communication skills with the ability to explain complex technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences.
• Experience developing and maintaining automated testing and deployment pipelines.
