Job summary

Geelong-based position in the Geelong English Language School (GELS) within the Department of Education Victoria. The role supports EAL learners from Foundation to Year 10, working under supervision to assist teachers and build inclusive programs for newly arrived students.

Responsibilities include translating between teachers, students and parents, preparing resources, and supporting wellbeing with a focus on Karen/Karenni language literacy to aid integration and learning across all year levels.

Qualifications

• Capacity to support teachers and students within intensive EAL programs across all year levels.
• Ability to communicate effectively with students, families and school community members from diverse backgrounds.
• Proficiency in ICT and digital learning tools relevant to EAL support.

Responsibilities

• Support student learning on an individual or group basis with direction from class teacher.
• Translate communication between teachers and non-English speaking students in the classroom.
• Translate communication between teachers and non-English speaking parents during enrolment interviews and conferences.
• Assist in translating school documents and resources using interpreting services.
• Prepare basic curriculum resources and liaise with external support services.
• Support staff in student wellbeing and provide cultural insights where possible.
