Job summary

VEX Group Pty Ltd in Mackay, Queensland, is seeking an experienced Draftsman / Estimator to join our Mackay-based team. You will create detailed drawings and develop 3D models using SolidWorks, while producing accurate estimates for fabrication, manufacturing and project works.

Qualifications

• Previous experience as a Draftsman, Estimator or Draftsman / Estimator within fabrication, mining or heavy industry.
• Strong proficiency in drafting and 3D modelling software – SolidWorks preferred.
• Good understanding of structural steel and mechanical fabrication.
• Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, technical specifications and scopes of work.
• Experience with material take-offs, labour estimating and project costing.

Responsibilities

• Create detailed technical drawings, fabrication drawings and plans using SolidWorks (preferred).
• Develop detailed 3D models and drawings for mechanical and structural projects.
• Interpret sketches, site measurements, scopes of work, client specifications and engineering information.
• Develop and refine mechanical and structural designs based on project requirements.
• Produce workshop-ready drawings, assemblies, layouts and detailed fabrication drawings.
• Collaborate with clients, engineers, workshop teams and management to ensure designs are practical and accurate.
• Revise drawings to incorporate client, engineering and workshop feedback.
• Ensure drawings comply with industry standards and project requirements.
• Prepare detailed estimates and quotations for fabrication, manufacturing, repair and project works.
• Complete material take-offs and quantity take-offs from drawings and client documentation.
• Estimate labour hours, materials, equipment and subcontractor requirements.
• Obtain and review supplier and subcontractor pricing as needed.
• Assist with preparing tender and quotation submissions.
• Identify scope gaps, risks and potential variations during estimating.
• Maintain estimating records and quotation documentation.
• Handover successful quotations to workshop/project delivery teams.

Key Responsibilities

Drafting & Design

• Create detailed technical drawings, fabrication drawings and plans using SolidWorks (preferred)
• Develop detailed 3D models and drawings for mechanical and structural projects

• Develop and refine mechanical and structural designs based on project requirements

• Collaborate with clients, engineers, Workshop Foremen, the Business Development Manager and other team members to ensure designs are practical, accurate and fit for purpose
• Revise drawings to incorporate client, engineering and workshop feedback
• Ensure drawings comply with relevant industry standards, specifications and project requirements
• Maintain organised documentation, drawing registers and revision control
• Review client enquiries, scopes of work, drawings and specifications to determine project requirements
• Prepare detailed estimates and quotations for fabrication, manufacturing, repair and project works
• Complete accurate material take-offs and quantity take-offs from drawings, models and client documentation
• Estimate labour hours, materials, equipment, subcontractor requirements and other project costs
• Obtain and review supplier and subcontractor pricing where required
• Assist with preparing competitive tender and quotation submissions
• Identify scope gaps, exclusions, assumptions, risks and potential variations during the estimating process
• Work closely with the Business Development Manager, Workshop Manager to develop practical and commercially competitive solutions
• Assist with determining fabrication methodologies and realistic workshop labour requirements
• Maintain accurate estimating records, costing information and quotation documentation
• Assist with handover of successful quotations to the workshop/project delivery team
• Review completed projects against estimates to improve the accuracy of future labour and material allowances

Requirements for Success

• Previous experience as a Draftsman, Estimator or Draftsman / Estimator within fabrication, manufacturing, mining or a similar heavy industry
• Strong proficiency in drafting and 3D modelling software – SolidWorks preferred
• Good understanding of structural steel and mechanical fabrication
• Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, technical specifications and scopes of work
• Experience with material take-offs, labour estimating and project costing
• Practical understanding of fabrication processes and workshop operations
• High level of attention to detail and accuracy
• Strong organisational and time-management skills
• Ability to manage multiple quotations, drawings and priorities simultaneously
• Strong communication skills and ability to work collaboratively across workshop, engineering, projects and management teams
• Trade background and/or previous hands-on fabrication experience would be highly regarded
• Qualification in drafting, engineering, mechanical design or a related field would be advantageous
