Job summary

ARC Disability Services in Cairns, Queensland, is seeking experienced Disability Support Workers to assist participants with dual diagnosis presentations, including intellectual disability and co-existing mental health conditions. This casual/temporary role focuses on home and community-based support.

You will provide practical and emotional support to help participants achieve goals, develop independence and participate in everyday life, covering personal care, community access, medication

Qualifications

  • Experience supporting people with intellectual disability and co‑existing mental health conditions.
  • Experience supporting people with complex behavioural and psychosocial needs.
  • Experience implementing Positive Behaviour Support Plans.
  • Experience supporting behaviours of concern.

Responsibilities

  • Provide personal care and support with daily living activities.
  • Support participants to access the community and participate in social activities.
  • Implement Positive Behaviour Support Plans and other support strategies.
  • Support participants experiencing mental health challenges and changes in wellbeing.
  • Assist participants with emotional regulation and behaviours of concern.
  • Maintain accurate case notes, documentation and reporting.
  • Follow participant support plans and relevant organisational procedures.
  • Work collaboratively with participants, families, allied health professionals and other support networks.
  • Promote participant choice, independence, dignity and quality of life.

Key Responsibilities


  • Provide personal care and support with daily living activities

  • Support participants to access the community and participate in social activities

  • Implement Positive Behaviour Support Plans and other support strategies

  • Support participants experiencing mental health challenges and changes in wellbeing

  • Assist participants with emotional regulation and behaviours of concern

  • Maintain accurate case notes, documentation and reporting

  • Follow participant support plans and relevant organisational procedures

  • Work collaboratively with participants, families, allied health professionals and other support networks

  • Promote participant choice, independence, dignity and quality of life

  • Maintain appropriate professional boundaries and confidentiality

  • Identify and respond appropriately to changes in participant needs and wellbeing



About You
We are looking for Support Workers who have:


  • Demonstrated experience supporting people with intellectual disability and co‑existing mental health conditions

  • Experience supporting people with complex behavioural and psychosocial needs

  • Experience implementing Positive Behaviour Support Plans

  • Experience supporting behaviours of concern

  • Strong communication, de‑escalation and problem‑solving skills

  • The ability to remain calm and professional in challenging situations

  • An understanding of trauma‑informed and person‑centred support

  • The ability to work independently and as part of a team

  • Flexibility to work across a range of shifts and support environments

  • The ability to maintain appropriate professional boundaries



Experience in dual diagnosis support is essential for this position.

Essential Requirements


  • Current Queensland Driver Licence

  • Registered and comprehensively insured vehicle

  • Current Blue Card or ability to obtain

  • Current NDIS Worker Screening Clearance or ability to obtain

  • Australian working rights

  • Ability to meet organisational pre‑employment screening requirements, including drug and alcohol testing where applicable



Highly Regarded


  • Mental Health First Aid qualification or similar training

  • Additional training or experience in Positive Behaviour Support, psychosocial disability or complex support
