Qualifications

• TAFE Certificate IV in Allied Health Assistance or equivalent experience in nutrition/dietary support.
• Certificate in Food Safety or willingness to obtain prior to commencement.
• Experience in hospital food services or patient-focused food service is desirable.
• Understanding of safe food handling, hygiene and infection control.

Responsibilities

• Assist with preparation, plating, tray assembly, delivery and collection of patient meals.
• Collect patient menus and meal selections from wards and ensure timely return.
• Review meal choices against diet codes, allergies, and texture modification requirements.
• Follow hospital food safety programs and infection control standards.
• Maintain clean and hygienic kitchen, servery and food prep areas.
• Support accurate meal distribution including therapeutic diets and supplements.
• Communicate respectfully with patients and hospital staff.
• Assist with stock rotation, waste management and general kitchen duties.
• Report any food quality or safety concerns to the supervisor promptly.

About the role

• Support the safe preparation, plating and delivery of patient meals
• Ensure hospital food safety standards, infection control requirements, and individual dietary needs are consistently met
• Ensure patient confidentiality is respected and protected at all times

Key responsibilities

• Assist with preparation, plating, tray assembly, delivery, and collection of patient meals in accordance with hospital menus and diet codes
• Collect patient menus and meal selections from wards, ensuring information is complete, accurate, and returned within required timeframes
• Assist with menu analysis by reviewing patient meal choices against diet codes, allergies, IDDSI standard texture modification requirements, therapeutic diets, supplements, escalating any concerns to the Dietitian, nursing staff, or supervisor
• Follow a hospital food safety program, policy and procedures, infection control standards, and workplace health and safety requirements at all times
• Help maintain a clean and hygienic kitchen, servery and food preparation environment
• Support accurate meal distribution, including therapeutic diets, allergies, texture-modified meals and nutritional supplements
• Communicate respectfully with patients, visitors, nursing staff, dietitians, allied health staff, and food services team members
• Assist with stock rotation, storage, dishwashing, waste management, and general kitchen duties as required
• Report food quality, safety, equipment, patient meal, or service concerns to the supervisor promptly

Essential Qualifications, Skills and Experience

• TAFE Certificate IV in Allied Health Assistance, with relevant units or experience in nutrition and dietetics support, dietary aide work, or hospital food services.
• Certificate in Food Safety, Food Handling, or willingness to obtain prior to commencement.
• Previous experience in hospital food services, aged care or a similar patient-focused food service environment is desirable.
• Understanding of safe food handling, hygiene, infection control, allergen awareness, and the importance of correct diet textures and diet codes
• Ability to follow written and verbal instructions, including menus, patient meal lists, diet sheets, dietary requirements, and menu collection processes
• Strong attention to detail when checking patient menu selections, diet codes, allergies, and special dietary instructions
• Good communication skills and a respectful, patient-centred approach
• Ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team and manage tasks in a busy hospital service environment
• Physical ability to perform duties including standing, walking, lifting, carrying, pushing meal trolleys, and general cleaning tasks

Desirable Criteria

• Completion of a TAFE qualification in Allied Health Assistance, Health Support Services, Nutrition and Dietetics Assistance
• Experience working with therapeutic diets, texture-modified diets, nutritional supplements, patient meal ordering systems, or special dietary needs
• Knowledge of hospital food service systems (food safety program) and general understanding of healthcare system software (Webpas), HACCP principles, infection control
• Current National Police Check, Working With Children Check
• Current influenza and COVID-19 vaccinations, where required by the organisation or role
