The business requires ongoing servicing, preventative maintenance, fault diagnosis and mechanical repairs to maintain vehicle reliability and minimise operational downtime.
Position Overview The Diesel Motor Mechanic will be responsible for diagnosing, servicing, maintaining and repairing diesel-powered buses and associated mechanical components. The role includes scheduled maintenance, mechanical and electrical fault diagnosis, engine and component repairs, diagnostic testing and breakdown support.
Key Responsibilities Mechanical Diagnosis & Repairs
- Detect and diagnose mechanical and electrical faults in diesel engines and vehicle components.
- Dismantle and remove engines, transmissions, steering mechanisms and other components.
- Repair and replace worn or defective parts and reassemble mechanical components.
- Diagnose and test vehicle systems using computer-assisted diagnostic equipment.
- Test and adjust repaired components to ensure proper performance.
- Inspect and repair transmissions, suspension, steering and braking systems.
- Refer to service manuals and manufacturer specifications when undertaking repairs.
Servicing & Preventative Maintenance
- Perform scheduled servicing, including oil changes, lubrication and engine tune-ups.
- Conduct preventative maintenance to identify developing mechanical issues.
- Inspect engines and vehicle components for wear, damage and deterioration.
- Maintain appropriate servicing and maintenance schedules.
- Complete repairs required to maintain safe and reliable vehicle operation.
Fleet & Breakdown Support
- Support the ongoing maintenance requirements of the business's bus fleet.
- Respond to vehicle breakdowns and diagnose mechanical faults where required.
- Undertake timely repairs to minimise vehicle downtime.
- Inspect vehicles and identify work required to support roadworthiness.
- Maintain accurate records of servicing, repairs and maintenance undertaken.
Workplace Health & Safety
- Follow applicable workplace health and safety procedures.
- Use workshop tools and diagnostic equipment safely and appropriately.
- Maintain a safe, clean and organised workshop environment.
- Identify mechanical and workplace hazards and take appropriate corrective action.
Skills & Experience
- Relevant experience servicing and repairing diesel engines and heavy vehicles.
- Strong knowledge of engines, transmissions, brakes, steering and suspension systems.
- Experience with mechanical fault diagnosis and computer-assisted diagnostic equipment.
- Ability to undertake scheduled servicing and preventative maintenance.
- Strong mechanical problem-solving and fault-finding skills.
- Ability to work independently and manage maintenance priorities.
Qualifications
- AQF Certificate III, including at least two years of on-the-job training, or AQF Certificate IV in a relevant automotive mechanical field; or
- At least three years of relevant experience may substitute for the formal qualification where applicable.
- Registration or licensing may be required.
