Job summary

ASIC, headquartered in Canberra, is seeking a Deputy General Counsel – Corporate Legal Services to lead a broad portfolio spanning commercial and employment law, litigation and public law, information and data law, and legal operations.

You will provide strategic leadership, strengthen risk management and support confident decision-making across ASIC, while mentoring senior legal leaders and driving continuous improvements.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the delivery of expert, practical legal advice on complex and high-risk matters affecting ASIC as a Commonwealth entity.
  • Oversee legal services across employment, commercial, litigation, public law, governance, privacy, information law, FOI, data and legal operations.
  • Build trusted relationships with the Commission, executive leaders and key stakeholders, influencing enterprise-wide decisions and priorities.
  • Lead, mentor and develop senior legal leaders, fostering a high-performing, inclusive and collaborative culture.
  • Drive continuous improvement in legal services, including processes, systems, technology, expenditure management and performance reporting.
  • Contribute to the overall leadership of Legal Services and represent the group in ASIC-wide governance forums and strategic initiatives.

Purpose

As Deputy General Counsel – Corporate Legal Services, you will be a senior member of ASIC's Legal Services leadership team. You will lead a broad portfolio spanning commercial and employment law, litigation and public law, information and data law, and legal operations. You will provide strategic legal leadership, strengthen legal risk management and support confident, well-informed decision-making across ASIC.

Your role
  • Lead the delivery of expert, practical legal advice on complex and high-risk matters affecting ASIC as a Commonwealth entity.

About You

You are an accomplished legal leader, admitted to practise in an Australian jurisdiction, with senior level experience in government or the private sector.

You have led senior and experienced teams across diverse practice areas and advised on complex, sensitive and strategically significant matters. You bring sound judgement, commercial and public-sector awareness, and the ability to translate complex legal issues into clear, actionable advice.

A trusted adviser and collaborative leader, you can influence at the highest levels, manage competing priorities and lead teams through change.
