Job summary

Talent is seeking an experienced Mainframe Developer to support a major Defence program in a secure environment. The role involves development, enhancement and sustainment of key Defence applications, working with legacy technologies and batch processing across controlled systems.

The ideal candidate will have hands-on COBOL, DB2 and SQL skills, experience with C# or C++, and a strong capability in debugging, testing and documentation. A security clearance or eligibility is preferred.

Qualifications

• Strong hands-on mainframe development experience.
• COBOL development experience.
• Experience with DB2, SQL, and C# or C++ is highly regarded.
• Experience with batch processing environments.
• Experience maintaining legacy applications.
• Strong debugging and root-cause analysis skills.
• Experience integrating mainframe with other enterprise systems.
• Experience through structured testing: system and integration tests.
• Ability to work in secure, governed environments.
• Strong technical documentation and communication skills.
• Defence/National Security or Federal Government experience is desirable.

Responsibilities

• Develop, maintain and enhance mainframe applications supporting Defence capability.
• Perform application and software development activities across the full development lifecycle.
• Support reliable batch processing and scheduled workloads within secure environments.
• Analyse technical and functional requirements and contribute to solution design.
• Troubleshoot application issues, identify root causes and implement fixes.
• Support code changes, defect resolution, testing and deployment activities.
• Work closely with technical leads, architects, testers and other delivery teams.
• Contribute to system integration across legacy and downstream platforms.
• Produce and maintain technical documentation including design, testing and as-built docs.
• Work within Defence change, release, configuration and security processes.
• Support transition and knowledge transfer into sustainment teams.
