Responsibilities

• Provide strategic and operational leadership in the delivery of cyber security objectives and business outcomes.
• Lead the development and implementation of cyber security strategies, policies and a core program of work across your discipline.
• Inform enterprise decision-making through expert advice on cyber risk, security architecture or operational threat management to support business resilience.
• Drive the identification, assessment and treatment of cyber security risks across business-critical systems and services through preventive, detective or corrective measures.
• Lead cyber security assurance activities including audits, risk assessments, IRAP engagements, Essential Eight uplift activities and Cyber Authorisations to Operate.
• Strengthen detection, response and recovery capabilities through security operations, threat intelligence and incident response preparedness.

The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) is seeking an experienced and visionary cyber security leader to join our Technology and Security Division as a Cyber Security Director (EL2) in our Security and Information Assurance Branch.

About the role

This is a unique opportunity to lead the delivery of cyber security outcomes that protect one of Australia's most trusted public institutions and some of the nation's most valuable data assets.

You will provide strategic leadership, influence enterprise decision-making and drive the continual uplift of the ABS’ cyber security capability. You will work under the broad direction of the CISO, with technical specialists, executive leaders, inter-agency federal government peers and industry partners to ensure the ABS remains secure, resilient and trusted in an increasingly complex threat environment.

As a Cyber Security Director, you will:

• provide strategic and operational leadership in the delivery of cyber security objectives and business outcomes
• lead the development and implementation of cyber security strategies, policies and a core program of work across your discipline
• inform enterprise decision-making through expert advice on cyber risk, security architecture or operational threat management to support the continued business resilience of the ABS
• drive the identification, assessment and treatment of cyber security risks across business-critical systems and services either through preventative, detective or corrective mechanisms
• lead cyber security assurance activities including audits, risk assessments, IRAP engagements, Essential Eight uplift activities and Cyber Authorisations to Operate
• strengthen detection, response and recovery capabilities through security operations, threat intelligence and incident response preparedness and leverage those learnings for continuous improvement
• build, nurture and sustain a high-performing workforce through coaching, mentoring, workforce planning and professional development
• promote a cyber-conscious culture, drive literacy initiatives and help improve security capability across the ABS
• remain abreast of the evolving threat landscape and proactively harness those insights to support the ABS’s ongoing business resilience.

To be suitable you should have some or all of the following skills, qualities and experience and reflect accordingly within your CV:

• Strategic Leadership - Demonstrated ability to provide strategic leadership in complex operating environments, aligning cyber security outcomes with organisational objectives, managing risk and responding to emerging challenges.
• Stakeholder Engagement and Influence - Proven ability to build trusted relationships, communicate complex cyber security concepts to diverse audiences and influence stakeholders to achieve business outcomes as well as negotiate across competing priorities and stakeholder interests.
• People Leadership - Demonstrated experience leading and developing high-performing teams through coaching, capability building and fostering an inclusive and accountable culture.
• Governance and Operational Delivery Excellence - Proven ability to deliver complex programs of work, manage competing priorities, drive continuous improvement and achieve measurable business outcomes.

In addition, you should demonstrate Cyber Security Expertise across one or more of the following disciplines:

• Cyber security governance and risk management
• Security operations and incident response

You will have a strong working knowledge of Australian Government security frameworks such as the Protective Security Policy Framework and Information Security Manual and cyber security legislation.
