Job summary

You will design, configure and implement security controls across the Microsoft stack and cloud environments, gaining hands-on experience that leads toward security architecture and compliance.

Qualifications

• At least 3 years' experience in a senior IT (Level 3) or security engineering role.
• Solid understanding of security controls and why they exist.
• Hands-on with the Microsoft stack, including Microsoft 365 and cloud security.
• Familiar with vulnerability scanning and management tools.
• An inquisitive mind, asks questions and fixes misconfigurations.
• The confidence to say “I'm not sure, let me check”.
• Strong communication skills to explain technical concepts to different audiences.
• Knowledge of ISO 27001, NIST or the Essential Eight.
• Exposure to security architecture, risk management or compliance programs.
• Experience delivering security projects or consulting services.

Responsibilities

We're partnering with a well-established Brisbane-based IT company that is growing its cyber security practice, and they're looking for a curious, driven Cyber Engineer to help shape what comes next.

Here's what makes this role different. Most people in cyber inherit controls that someone else configured years ago. In this role, you'll be hands‑on designing, configuring and implementing them yourself, seeing first‑hand how a security architecture comes together and how individual controls add up to real compliance and real protection. That's the kind of experience that opens doors to some of the hardest‑to‑break‑into areas of cyber, like security architecture and compliance.

You'll be mentored by a Cyber Security Manager with 20 years' experience across the industry who is genuinely invested in building careers. Most organisations make you pick a lane: technical or governance. Here, you'll be trained in both, and you'll come out a stronger, more versatile security professional for it.

About the Role

This is not a traditional SOC role spent watching alerts and applying patches. You'll work across security engineering, architecture, compliance, vulnerability management and consulting, helping the business and its clients put practical, effective security in place. As projects come in, you'll help scope the architecture and advise on the best option for each scenario, with plenty of support as you build those skills.

What You'll Be Doing

About You

Plenty of people put “cyber” on their resume. We're looking for someone who actually lights up when they talk about it: someone who can tell you which part of cyber interests them and why, and who cares about doing the right thing rather than the easy thing. Bring the drive and the right foundation, and the rest can be taught.

You will have

• At least 3 years' experience in a senior IT (Level 3) or security engineering role
• A solid understanding of security controls: why they exist, not just how to respond to them
• Hands‑on experience with the Microsoft stack, including Microsoft 365 and cloud security
• Familiarity with vulnerability scanning and management tools (we're tool‑agnostic)
• An inquisitive mind. You ask questions, challenge assumptions and never walk past a misconfiguration
• The confidence to say “I'm not sure, let me check”. You know your limits and see asking as a strength
• Strong communication skills and the ability to explain technical concepts to different audiences
• The ability to balance security requirements with practical business outcomes
• Working knowledge of cyber security frameworks such as ISO 27001, NIST or the Essential Eight
• Exposure to security architecture, risk management or compliance programs
• Experience delivering security projects or consulting services

Certifications We Value

No degree required. Hands‑on experience, drive and industry certifications count for more here. The following would be highly regarded:

• CompTIA Security+
• Microsoft security certifications (e.g. Microsoft Security Operations Analyst)
