Job summary

Victorian Aboriginal Legal Service (VALS) is seeking a thoughtful Bail and Remand Support Program Report Writer to prepare culturally informed Aboriginal Bail Reports for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander adults in bail matters.

You will interview clients, gather information, conduct socio-historical and cultural research, and produce concise, evidence-based reports under tight court timeframes.

Qualifications

• Strong writing and research skills.
• Ability to interview and engage people to elicit sensitive personal and cultural information.
• Understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history, culture and barriers.
• Ability to produce high-quality professional reports.

Responsibilities

• Conduct culturally safe interviews with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients in custodial and community settings.
• Gather information about clients' circumstances, Aboriginal identity, cultural connections and supports.
• Undertake socio-historical, cultural research to understand each client.
• Prepare high-quality Aboriginal Bail Reports within short court timeframes.
• Collaborate with the Bail and Remand Support Coordinator and other stakeholders.
• Maintain accurate case notes and handle confidential information appropriately.
• Participate in supervision and professional development.
