Job summary

UnitingCare Queensland is seeking a Counsellor for our Community Mental Health team in Cairns. You will provide counselling and therapeutic support to children, young people, adults and families, addressing family challenges, separation, parenting, domestic violence, trauma and grief.

Counsellor | Community Mental Health | Cairns

  • Employment Term: Permanent Part-Time (22.8 hours per week)
  • Location: Cairns
  • Remuneration: $53.43 per hour + Super + NFP Salary Packaging (save tax and increase your take home pay)

Your part in our UnitingCare team

In this rewarding role, you’ll provide counselling and therapeutic support to children, young people, adults, families and groups. You’ll work with clients experiencing a range of concerns, including:

  • Family and relationship challenges
  • Separation and divorce
  • Parenting and family wellbeing
  • Domestic and family violence
  • Sexual abuse and child abuse
  • Grief and loss
  • Trauma and recovery

You’ll undertake assessments, provide counselling and referrals, participate in case reviews, facilitate group support and education, and advocate for clients to support positive outcomes.

What makes a difference for us?
  • A bachelor’s degree (or higher) in Counselling, Psychology, Social Work, Human Services or Behavioural Science
  • Experience providing counselling and therapeutic interventions within a community or human services setting
  • Knowledge of trauma-informed, strengths-based and recovery-focused practice
  • Experience working with children, young people and families
  • Strong communication, advocacy and stakeholder engagement skills
  • Experience facilitating groups and educational programs (highly regarded)
  • The ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team
  • A current Driver License and Working with Children Check (Blue Card)

Membership or eligibility for membership with APS, PACFA, ACA, AASW or FCA will be highly regarded
