Job summary

CSIRO is seeking an Agricultural Research Farm Hand based at the Australian Cotton Research Institute in Narrabri, NSW. You will support hands-on field and glasshouse cotton research, including sowing, harvesting, irrigation and maintenance of equipment at Myall Vale and regional sites.

You will work independently and with the Breeding Support team on experimental design, data collection and sample processing to help develop improved cotton varieties suited to Australian growing regions.

Qualifications

• Current driver’s licence (C).
• Demonstrated understanding and experience in the competent operation of row crop farming equipment together with the management of irrigation systems.
• The ability to lift, bend, walk and undertake repetitive motions and the ability to undertake manual handling and operate equipment safely in accordance with Health and Safety Procedures.
• The ability to work effectively as part of a multi‑disciplinary, regionally dispersed research team, and carry out tasks under general direction from Scientific Researchers.
• The ability and willingness to work in harsh and adverse conditions whilst maintaining health and safety requirements.

Responsibilities

• Operate planting, cultivation, fertiliser, spraying and harvesting equipment to manage cotton and other crops at Myall Vale and remote sites; travel may be required.
• Irrigate crops as directed and when required.
• Assist with other operations within the CSIRO cotton breeding program, including crossing, glasshouse operations and trial prep.
• Be an active member of a large team supporting an extensive cotton breeding program to develop improved cultivars.
• Provide instruction and assist other staff to complete allocated tasks and activities.
