Job summary

AIG is seeking a Corporate Counsel for the Pacific region to provide end-to-end legal and regulatory support across Australia and New Zealand. You will advise on policy wordings, endorsements, distribution arrangements and insurance law, while coordinating with internal teams and external counsel.

Based in Australia, you will report to the Head of Legal, Pacific, and collaborate with colleagues globally. This is a 12-month fixed-term contract with potential extension, requiring strong judgement

Qualifications

• Must have a law degree and an unrestricted Australian practising certificate.
• Proven post-qualification experience in-house or private practice with general insurance exposure.
• Ability to advise on insurance law, regulatory matters and commercial agreements.

How you will create an impact

The Corporate Counsel, Pacific will provide end-to-end legal and regulatory support to AIG’s Pacific operations (Australia and New Zealand). The role will advise on product wordings, schedules, endorsements, distribution arrangements, insurance law, regulatory requirements and related commercial matters, helping AIG’s business pursue growth opportunities in a well-controlled and legally sound manner.

Based in any of our Australian locations and reporting to the Head of Legal, Pacific, you will work closely with colleagues across Australia and globally. The team also supports AIG’s New Zealand legal needs, as appropriate. You will join a settled and collaborative legal team that resolves many issues through discussion, sound judgement and accumulated experience, while supporting one another during peak production periods.

This is a 12-month fixed-term contract with the potential for extension, subject to business requirements.

Key accountabilities will include

• Review policy wordings, policy schedules and endorsements across insurance products.
• Advise on AIG form, broker-led and manuscript wordings, including negotiating wordings and endorsements with brokers and large corporate clients.
• Provide legal advice on distribution models, binder agreements and other third-party distribution arrangements, including assessing applicable regulatory requirements.
• Advise the business on compliance with insurance law and regulation, including the Corporations Act, Insurance Contracts Act, financial services laws and relevant regulatory expectations.
• Instruct and work closely with external counsel where specialised input is required, including in relation to complex policy wording reviews.
• Provide advice on premium funding arrangements and support underwriters in relation to policy cancellation matters.
• Review and sign off collateral, communications, DISCLAIMERS, legal notices and other customer or market-facing materials.
• Support broader legal, regulatory and company secretarial matters as required, including APRA and ASIC-related matters, and provide support across the team during peak periods.

What you’ll need to succeed

• Proven post-qualified senior legal experience gained in-house or in private practice, with general insurance experience critical.
• Degree or tertiary qualification in law and an unrestricted Australian practising certificate.
• Strong understanding of general insurance concepts and laws, Australian privacy law including the APPs, contract law and financial services laws.
• Experience reviewing, drafting and negotiating insurance policy wordings, endorsements, schedules, binder agreements or other distribution arrangements.
• Ability to provide practical, commercially aware legal advice while maintaining strong attention to detail, sound judgement and appropriate escalation discipline.
• Ability to work effectively with a wide range of stakeholders, including underwriters, practice leaders, junior team members, brokers, external counsel and local or global business partners.
• Collaborative and flexible working style, with a willingness to be involved in a variety of legal, regulatory and commercial matters in a fast-paced environment.
• Ability to handle confidential information appropriately, maintain proper records and keep abreast of changes in relevant legislation, regulation and case law.
• Strong drafting skills, problem-solving capability and a willingness to continue developing technical expertise in insurance and regulatory matters.
