Job summary

Design & Build Recruitment is seeking a Controls/PLC Engineer to join a Western Sydney project delivering critical automation for automated baggage handling and materials handling systems. You will design, program, test, and commission PLC-based control solutions, ensuring high availability and safety in a live infrastructure environment.

The role requires hands-on Siemens PLC programming experience (S7 variants, TIA Portal) and proficiency with SCADA/HMI (WinCC or similar).

Qualifications

• Degree qualified in Electrical, Electronic, Mechatronic, or Controls Engineering (or equivalent)
• Proven hands-on Siemens PLC programming experience (S7-300/400/1500, TIA Portal) — essential
• Experience with SCADA/HMI systems (WinCC or similar)
• Background in materials handling, conveyor systems, or large-scale automated logistics systems highly regarded
• Comfortable working on a live, high-profile infrastructure project with strict safety and quality standards
• Strong fault-finding and commissioning experience — able to work through complex control system issues under pressure
• Excellent communication skills, able to liaise across engineering, project management, and client stakeholders

Responsibilities

• Design, develop, and commission PLC and SCADA control systems for large-scale automated materials handling equipment
• Program and configure using Siemens PLC platforms (S7, TIA Portal, WinCC or equivalent)
• Support system integration, testing, and commissioning across a major site's automated handling infrastructure
• Troubleshoot and resolve control system faults during commissioning and post-handover support phases
• Collaborate with mechanical, electrical, and project engineering teams to ensure systems meet performance and safety requirements
• Produce and maintain technical documentation, including control philosophies, I/O lists, and functional specifications
• Support continuous improvement and reliability initiatives as the system transitions into live operation
