Job summary

Normark Landscapes Pty Ltd in Melbourne is seeking a Construction Estimator to prepare accurate cost estimates for landscape and civil works. You will review plans, take-offs and tender docs, obtaining quotations and supporting tender submissions.

The role requires 1–3 years' estimating experience, proficiency in Excel and estimating software, and strong analytical skills. You will work with senior estimators to prepare competitive tenders and cost plans.

Qualifications

• Qualification in Construction Management, Building and Construction, Quantity Surveying, Estimating, Civil Engineering or related field.
• Approximately 1–3 years of experience in construction estimating, quantity take-offs, cost planning or tendering.
• Demonstrated knowledge of construction materials, building methods and tendering processes.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and estimating software used in the construction industry.

Responsibilities

• Review and interpret drawings, specifications, tender documents and project information to determine scope and estimating requirements.
• Prepare quantity take-offs and calculate material, labour, plant, equipment and subcontractor costs for residential and commercial projects.
• Prepare preliminary estimates, detailed cost estimates, pricing schedules and cost plans under guidance of senior staff.
• Prepare scopes of work and obtain quotations from suppliers and subcontractors for inclusion in estimates and tenders.
• Analyse quotations to assess cost competitiveness and project pricing.
• Liaise with clients, architects, engineers, consultants, suppliers and subcontractors for estimating data.
• Attend site inspections, tender briefings and subcontractor meetings to support the estimating process.

Job description

Reporting directly to the Pre-Construction Manager and Senior Construction Estimator, the Construction Estimator will assist in preparing accurate cost estimates for landscape construction and civil landscaping projects. The role involves reviewing plans, specifications and tender documentation, undertaking quantity take-offs, obtaining supplier and subcontractor quotations, and supporting tender preparation and project budgeting activities. The position will calculate material, labour, plant and equipment costs, assist in preparing pricing schedules and cost plans, and contribute to the assessment of project scope, tender requirements and estimating risks. The successful applicant will work closely with senior estimating personnel in preparing competitive and commercially sound tenders.

Key responsibilities

Review and interpret construction drawings, specifications, tender documents, relevant legislation and project information to assist in determining project scope and estimating requirements.

Prepare quantity take-offs and assist in calculating material, labour, plant, equipment and subcontractor costs required for residential and commercial construction projects.

Assist in preparing preliminary estimates, detailed cost estimates, pricing schedules, cost plans and tender submissions under the guidance of senior estimating personnel.

Prepare scopes of work and obtain quotations from suppliers and subcontractors for inclusion in project estimates and tenders.

Analyse and compare supplier and subcontractor quotations to assist in assessing cost competitiveness and project pricing.

Liaise with clients, architects, engineers, consultants, suppliers and subcontractors to obtain information relevant to estimating, tendering and project costing activities.

Attend site inspections, tender briefings, subcontractor meetings and tender review meetings as required to support the estimating process.

Assist in identifying pricing discrepancies, scope omissions, cost implications and potential estimating risks and report findings to senior estimating staff.

Revise quantity take-offs, estimates and tender documentation following design amendments, tender clarifications, addenda or changes to project scope.

Maintain accurate estimating spreadsheets, pricing databases, supplier quotations, tender records and cost documentation.

About you

A qualification in Construction Management, Building and Construction, Quantity Surveying, Estimating, Civil Engineering or a related field, or equivalent relevant industry experience.

Approximately one to three years of experience in construction estimating, quantity take-offs, cost planning, tendering, project administration or a similar construction-related role.

Demonstrated knowledge of construction materials, building methods, construction documentation and tendering processes.

Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and estimating software used within the construction industry.

Ability to accurately analyse plans, specifications and cost information.

Strong analytical, numerical and problem-solving skills with attention to detail.

Effective written and verbal communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively with project stakeholders.

Ability to manage competing priorities and meet tender deadlines under supervision.
