ACT Policing Communications in Canberra is seeking two dedicated operators to join the 24/7 frontline team as Radio Operator and Call Taker. You will triage emergency and non-emergency calls, recording essential information to help coordinate police responses and resource deployment across incidents.

Ideal candidates demonstrate strong communication, calm decision-making under pressure, and the ability to work rotating shifts including nights and weekends.

  • Liaise with emergency services, Government agencies and support to provide high service levels.
  • Monitor public safety CCTV to support investigations.
  • Work on a 24/7 rostered shift pattern including nights and weekends.
  • Meet eligibility: Australian citizenship and minimum age of 18.

Applications are sought from those wishing to be considered for the role of Radio Operator and Call Taker within Communications, ACT Policing. ACT Policing Communications is ACT Policing's 24/7 communications and operations centre providing support to ACT Policing and the community, centralising telephone and radio communications and monitoring public safety CCTV systems.

As a Call Taker, you will work in teams to triage emergency and non-emergency calls, showcasing high-level communication skills, common-sense and good judgement, to be the first point of contact to callers in their time of need.

As a Radio Operator, you will actively support ACT Policing Officers by providing concise and accurate information on incidents to ensure appropriate resources can be dispersed to assist the ACT community in a timely and safe manner.

ACT Policing Communications provide a service that is 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. This means Radio Operator and Call Takers follow a 24/7 rostered operations shift pattern. As a Team Member of ACT Policing, within the AFP, you will also be required to contribute to the achievement of outcomes in accordance with the regulatory framework, the AFP Code of Conduct and the AFP Governance Instruments. It is expected that the successful applicant will deliver on the core responsibilities and meet any requirements of the position as outlined below.

What will you do?
  • Be the first point of contact for Emergency Triple Zero (000) and non-emergency (131 444) calls for Canberra and the surrounding community
  • Record time-critical information proficiently and accurately to task and assist in the management of ACT Police and Protective Service Officer responses to incidents
  • Record, monitor and report on operational activities using multiple databases; Computer-Aided Dispatch and Police Real-Time Online Management Information systems
  • Liaise with other emergency services, Government agencies, or other support to provide a high level of service to the ACT community
  • Monitor and utilise public safety CCTV systems to support criminal investigations and prosecutions
  • Work on a Rostered Operations shift pattern, including night and weekend hours, to suit the needs of the 24/7 ACT Policing environment.
  • You must be an Australian Citizen at the time of application
  • You must be 18 years of age at the time of commencement
  • A Negative Vetting 1 (Secret) security clearance or the ability to obtain one
  • Demonstrated ability to proactively contribute to a team, within a fast paced environment
  • Candidates will be required to complete a psychological assessment to be able to progress through this process.
