Job summary

HDR is seeking an experienced Commissioning Engineer - Mechanical (CxA) to join our Melbourne team. You’ll deliver commissioning services across project phases for mission critical facilities and building services, coordinating with contractors and clients to ensure on-site delivery.

The role requires autonomous on-site work, a focus on safety and quality, and the ability to manage complex technical challenges. Australian citizenship and baseline security clearance are required.

Responsibilities

• Deliver commissioning services across all phases of project execution, from planning and testing through to final handover.
• Prepare, review and implement Commissioning Management Plans (CMPs), test procedures and commissioning documentation.
• Review contractor, subcontractor and vendor commissioning plans, test scripts and energisation plans.
• Participate in and lead Factory Witness Tests (FWTs), Factory Acceptance Tests (FATs), site inspections and functional performance testing.
• Execute and oversee commissioning activities from installation verification through to integrated systems testing and handover.
• Troubleshoot mechanical system issues and work collaboratively with project stakeholders to resolve complex technical challenges.
• Maintain commissioning records, issue registers and project reporting.
• Coordinate commissioning activities with contractors, consultants, vendors and facility operators.
• Lead and participate in commissioning meetings while contributing to project planning, risk management and resolution of technical issues.
• Prepare and review final commissioning reports, test documentation and handover packages.
• Promote quality, safety and continuous improvement across all commissioning activities.

The Opportunity

As a Commissioning Engineer - Mechanical, you will play a key role in the planning, coordination, testing and delivery of commissioning activities across a diverse portfolio of projects, with a particular focus on mission critical facilities and critical infrastructure. This role is suited to a commissioning professional who can work independently on site, actively contribute to project delivery, and confidently engage with contractors, vendors, consultants and client teams throughout the commissioning process.

Australian Citizenship Requirement

Due to the nature of our current and future project portfolio, Australian Citizenship is a mandatory requirement for this position. Candidates must also be eligible to obtain and maintain an Australian Government Baseline Security Clearance, with the ability to obtain higher levels of clearance if required.

What You’ll Be Doing

Ideally, You’ll Have

• A tertiary qualification in Mechanical Engineering, Building Services Engineering or a related discipline.


• Alternatively, a mechanical trade background with demonstrated commissioning experience.


• Demonstrated experience delivering commissioning activities within building services, mission critical, healthcare or related environments.


• Strong knowledge of mechanical building systems including HVAC, chilled water, hydronic, fire protection and critical cooling systems.


• Experience conducting equipment inspections, Factory Witness Tests (FWTs) and Factory Acceptance Tests (FATs).


• Experience supporting or delivering site-based commissioning activities on complex projects.


• Strong troubleshooting and analytical skills.


• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.


• Experience working within data centres, healthcare facilities or other critical environments will be highly regarded.


• Experience using commissioning management systems and Microsoft Project will be advantageous.


• A willingness to travel to project sites as required.


• Professional commissioning accreditations such as ACG CxA, CSA, BCxA, ASHRAE BCxP, Green Star AP or LEED are highly regarded.
