Job summary

The Scots College in Sydney, NSW invites applications for a College Sergeant to uphold student conduct, safety, and wellbeing across Years 5–12. You will work closely with teaching and leadership teams and maintain a visible campus presence.

The role involves mentoring, managing detentions, coordinating with ICT and Facilities on CCTV, and supporting cadets and events such as ANZAC Day. WWCC and first aid are required.

Qualifications

  • WWCC clearance is required.
  • Driver's license; light/medium rigid capability advantageous for camp transport.
  • Relevant qualifications or equivalent professional experience in Youth Work, Education Support, Policing, the Military, or Behavioural Sciences.
  • Current First Aid and CPR certification (or willingness to obtain).

Responsibilities

Description:

The College Sergeant plays a pivotal role in maintaining high standards of student conduct, tone, culture, and wellbeing across the Years 5–12 student body. Working closely with teaching and executive staff, this position requires a highly visible, proactive presence on campus to ensure a safe, respectful, and well-managed school environment.

Key Accountabilities:
  • Maintain an active daily presence to monitor and enforce high standards of student grooming, uniform compliance, and punctuality.
  • Address and resolve lower-level behavioural issues in real-time, escalating matters and managing detentions when appropriate.
  • Provide immediate mentoring and guidance to students requiring behavioural support or intervention.
  • Collaborate with ICT and Facilities teams to manage campus security and utilize CCTV systems for behavioural and welfare investigations.
  • Provide behavioural oversight, pastoral care, and staff support during sporting events and internal/external school camps.
Major Areas of Responsibilities:
Campus Visibility & Student Conduct:

Maintain an active daily presence before and after school, during breaks, and across transition periods. Monitor and enforce high standards of student grooming, uniform compliance, and punctuality. Actively patrol hallways during lesson times to ensure timely attendance and monitor respectful classroom dynamics. Address and resolve lower-level behavioural issues in real-time, escalating matters when appropriate. Conduct and manage campus-specific detentions and sanctions as directed.

Mentoring, Pastoral Care & Event Support:

Provide immediate mentoring and guidance to students requiring behavioural support or intervention. Attend sporting events to oversee student conduct, behaviour, and uniform standards. Provide behavioural oversight, pastoral care, and staff support during internal and external school camps.

College Security & Operations:

Collaborate with ICT and Facilities teams to manage and utilize the College's CCTV systems. Review and interpret CCTV footage to assist with behavioural and welfare investigations. Support general campus security during school hours.

Cadets & Co-Curricular Engagement:

Support the College Cadet Unit and Pipes and Drums programs. Assist in the coordination and execution of ceremonial and representative events, including ANZAC Day.

Skills:
Conflict Resolution:

Strong de-escalation and restorative justice skills.

Communication:

Excellent interpersonal skills required to engage effectively with both adolescent boys and staff.

Administration:

Proficiency in data entry and student management systems for accurate record-keeping.

Skills and Experiences:
Knowledge:

Deep understanding of adolescent behaviour management frameworks, pastoral care practices, child protection laws, and school compliance regulation.

Specialized Experience:

Familiarity with structured youth development or military-style youth programs (e.g., Army Cadets) is highly desirable.

Essential Requirements:
  • Valid Working with Children Check (WWCC) clearance.
  • Valid Driver’s License (Light Rigid or Medium Rigid capability is advantageous for camp transport).
