Position Objective

The Clinical Nurse Consultant – Physical Health Care provides senior clinical leadership and specialist consultancy to support the delivery of high-quality, evidence-based physical health care at Thomas Embling Hospital. The role works across high and medium secure acute and rehabilitation hospital services to promote holistic, recovery-oriented and trauma-informed care by improving the assessment, management and monitoring of consumers’ physical health needs. The role provides educative consultation, mentoring and expert support to clinical and non-clinical staff to promote best practice physical health assessment, intervention, prevention and ongoing management of complex health conditions within a forensic mental health setting. The Clinical Nurse Consultant – Physical Health Care is responsible for leading service improvement and change initiatives that strengthen physical health care delivery, implementing evidence-based strategies that address the physical health needs of consumers, and ensuring consistent, coordinated approaches to care that improve safety, quality and operational effectiveness across the hospital. • Lead the development, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of physical health frameworks, models of care, clinical pathways and evidence-based practices to support consistent, high-quality physical health care across the hospital.
  • Drive implementation of strategic physical health priorities, including the Equally Well framework and other organisational, state and national physical health initiatives, ensuring these are translated into sustainable clinical practice.
  • Coordinate and support multidisciplinary approaches to physical health care, working collaboratively with medical, nursing, allied health and external providers to ensure integrated, coordinated and consumer-centred care.
Key Selection Criteria
  • Registered Nurse with current AHPRA registration and a relevant postgraduate qualification, supported by substantial post‑registration, independent clinical practice experience, preferably in mental health and/or forensic or correctional services.
  • Demonstrated advanced clinical expertise in mental health nursing, including the application of contemporary evidence-based practice, professional standards and relevant legislation to support consumers with complex needs.
  • Demonstrated commitment to recovery-oriented, trauma-informed and person-centred care, with experience leading initiatives that improve consumer outcomes.
  • Extensive knowledge of physical health issues experienced by people with serious mental illness, including chronic disease management, metabolic health, preventative health care, medicines monitoring and health promotion.
