Job description

Highlights
  • 2 x permanent opportunities
  • Design the infrastructure that shapes Newcastle’s future
  • Hybrid working that YOU design to ensure you’re there for the moments that matter most

At City of Newcastle (CN), you won't just design roads, drainage networks, cycleways and recreational infrastructure, you'll help create the places where our community lives, works and connects. This is an exciting opportunity to bring your technical expertise, creativity and project management skills to a role that delivers lasting outcomes for one of Australia's most vibrant and evolving cities. As a member of our team, you won't just work for the city; you’ll co‑create it. Here, your ideas and efforts directly shape the places where you and your community live, work, and play.

We currently have two permanent Civil Designer opportunities available within our team. As a Civil Designer, you will take a lead role in the design and delivery of a diverse range of civil infrastructure projects. From initial investigations and concept development through to detailed design, approvals and construction support, you will be responsible for producing high-quality design documentation that transforms ideas into community assets. Working collaboratively across the organisation and with external stakeholders, you will manage the design process, coordinate consultants and contractors, and oversee project budgets through the design and approval phases. You will provide technical advice during construction, work through complex design challenges and help ensure projects are delivered safely, sustainably and cost‑effectively. This role offers the opportunity to influence the future of Newcastle by delivering infrastructure that improves connectivity, enhances public spaces and supports a growing city. You'll apply your expertise to project investigations, design development, cost estimates, environmental assessments and planning approvals while ensuring compliance with relevant standards, legislation and best‑practice design principles. Beyond project delivery, you’ll play an important role in strengthening capability across the team by sharing your knowledge, supporting less experienced designers and contributing to innovation and continuous improvement. You'll help foster a collaborative environment where safety, excellence and creative problem‑solving are valued and encouraged.

We're looking for motivated and forward‑thinking professionals who combine strong technical design skills with the ability to build relationships, manage competing priorities and deliver high‑quality outcomes. Through your work, you’ll have a behind the scenes pass to Newcastle's evolution as you shape our future as a liveable, inclusive city.
