Job summary

SGS Australia is seeking an experienced Chemist to support a major industrial operation through high-quality laboratory analysis and process monitoring at a client site in Darwin. You will perform analytical testing, maintain instrumentation, support method development, and provide accurate, timely results to help production and quality objectives.

This hands-on role offers exposure to advanced instruments and a safety-focused lab environment.

Qualifications

  • A tertiary qualification in Chemistry or related science.
  • Experience with gas, LNG, petrochemical, oil & gas, or related process industries.
  • Strong understanding of laboratory quality systems and analytical methodologies.

Responsibilities

  • Carry out analytical testing on process, environmental, and utility samples.
  • Operate, calibrate, troubleshoot, and maintain laboratory instrumentation.
  • Generate reports and trend analyses using LIMS and Microsoft Office applications.
  • Safely collect and handle samples from process systems, including hydrocarbon gas and liquid streams.
  • Perform custody transfer analysis of LNG products with a high level of accuracy.
  • Act as a technical resource for sampling investigations and LNG-related laboratory systems.
  • Contribute to KPI reporting, laboratory performance monitoring, and contract deliverables.

Job Description

Are you an experienced Chemist with a passion for analytical testing and laboratory excellence? Join SGS and play a key role in supporting a major industrial operation through high-quality laboratory analysis, process monitoring, and continuous improvement initiatives.

Based at a client site in Darwin, this hands-on role offers the opportunity to work with advanced analytical instrumentation while contributing to the safe and efficient operation of a high-performing laboratory environment.

As a Chemist, you will be responsible for carrying out a range of analytical testing activities with minimal supervision while ensuring accurate, timely, and reliable results. You will support laboratory operations, maintain analytical equipment, contribute to method development, and work closely with site stakeholders to support production and quality objectives.

Responsibilities include, however are not limited to:

  • Conduct analytical testing on process, environmental, and utility samples

  • Manage laboratory records, calibration data, and test resuts within the LIMS system
  • Generate reports and trend analyses using LIMS and Microsoft Office applications
  • Safely collect and handle samples from process systems, including hydrocarbon gas and liquid streams
  • Perform custody transfer analysis of LNG products with a high level of accuracy
  • Act as a technical resource for sampling investigations and LNG-related laboratory systems
  • Contribute to KPI reporting, laboratory performance monitoring, and contract deliverables

Essential Technical Skills

Experience operating and maintaining analytical instrumentation, including:

  • Gas Chromatography (GC)
  • Ion Chromatography (IC)
  • Auto Titrators
  • UV/Visible Spectrophotometry
  • ICP (Inductively Coupled Plasma)
  • Sir Galahad or similar combustion analysis equipment
Qualifications

To be successful in this role, you will have:

  • A tertiary qualification in Chemistry or a related scientific discipline
  • Experience working with gas, LNG, petrochemical, oil & gas, or related process industries
  • Strong understanding of laboratory quality systems and analytical methodologies
  • Well-developed problem-solving and troubleshooting skills
  • High attention to detail and commitment to data accuracy
  • Strong computer literacy, including Microsoft Office applications and Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS)
