Job summary

Cleanaway Waste Management is seeking a hands-on Chemist to support oils and technical services in Australia. The role blends laboratory and field duties, handling diverse waste streams, sampling, and ensuring safe, compliant treatment and disposal.

You will work under the Operations Manager, applying risk assessments, documenting meticulously, and supporting regulatory compliance while contributing to safer, smarter waste management across the country.

Qualifications

• A degree in Chemistry, or equivalent.
• Experience working with waste or hazardous chemicals.
• Background in wastewater treatment, chemical fixation, or stabilization processes.
• Field sampling or laboratory experience.
• Confidence in operating laboratory instrumentation.
• Experience completing risk assessments and following work instructions.
• Strong attention to detail with meticulous record-keeping in highly regulated environments.
• Solid understanding of chemical legislation, safe handling, storage and disposal practices.

Responsibilities

• Process diverse waste chemical streams, including treatment, consolidation and repacking.
• Inspect, sample, assess and classify various chemical wastes.
• Support the Operations Manager with waste management, storage, transport and production activities.
• Prepare loads for transport with full dangerous goods regulatory compliance and accurate records.
• Conduct treatability trials and verify profitable waste treatment options.
• Liaise with authorities to ensure regulatory compliance.

The Opportunity

Responsibilities

As a key member of our technical team, you will play an essential role in the collection, treatment, processing, and recycling of liquid and hazardous waste. This is a varied and rewarding position for someone who enjoys both laboratory and operational work. You will be responsible for:

• Processing diverse waste chemical streams, including treatment, consolidation, and repackaging.
• Inspecting, sampling, assessing, and classifying various chemical wastes.
• Supporting the Operations Manager with waste management, storage, transport, and production activities.
• Preparing loads for transport, ensuring full compliance with dangerous goods regulations and accurate record-keeping.
• Conducting treatability trials, selecting suitable treatment methods, and verifying profitable waste treatment options.
• Liaising with relevant authorities and ensuring compliance with industry regulations

About You

You're naturally curious, solutions‑focused, and love working in a collaborative team. You bring:

• A degree in Chemistry, or equivalent
