Job summary

Exodus Foundation in Sydney is seeking a passionate and creative Chef to join Crews Café team. This casual position based in Ashfield offers 12–20 hours per week across weekday shifts, with opportunities to shape the menu and use seasonal and donated produce.

Qualifications

  • Experience in a commercial kitchen or café environment.
  • Ability to manage day-to-day operations in a small kitchen.
  • Experience with menu development and food cost management.
  • Current Food Safety Supervisor Certificate or willingness to obtain one.
  • Strong understanding of food safety, hygiene and safe kitchen practices.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.
  • Reliable and flexible across weekday shifts.
  • Ability to work with staff, volunteers and people from diverse backgrounds.

THE ROLE

We're looking for a passionate and creativeChefto join our Crews Café team.

We're rethinking what comes out of our kitchen and we're looking for someone who wants to be part of shaping what comes next.

This is an opportunity for a Chef who loves good food, enjoys bringing fresh ideas to the table and wants their work to have a genuine impact in the community.

Reporting to theCrews Café Coordinator, you’ll take ownership of day-to-day food preparation and café service while helping us refresh and develop our food offering. You’ll have the freedom to contribute ideas, create specials, make the most of seasonal and donated produce and find practical ways to deliver food that is simple, delicious and made with care.

You’ll work alongside staff and volunteers in a welcoming community environment where good food is about more than what's on the plate. It's about dignity, connection and creating a positive experience for every person who walks through our doors.

WHAT YOU'LL DO
  • Prepare and cook food for daily café service.
  • Create and rotate daily and weekly specials.
  • Help develop and implement a refreshed menu that is simple, tasty and suited to our community.
  • Bring fresh ideas to the kitchen and identify opportunities to continually improve our food offering.
  • Maintain a clean, safe andorganisedkitchen in accordance with food safety and hygiene requirements.
  • Manage stock levels, rotate inventory andminimisefood waste.
  • Make creative and practical use of seasonal and donated produce.
  • Monitor food quality, presentation and consistency.
  • Work collaboratively with staff and volunteers to support smooth café operations.
  • Support effective kitchen processes and service delivery.
  • Contribute to a positive, inclusive and respectful workplace culture.
WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR

You're a confident and capable Chef who is comfortable taking ownership of a small kitchen while still enjoying being part of a broader team.

You're creative and practical and you know that great food doesn't need to be complicated. You can look at what's available and think about how to make the most of it while balancing quality, efficiency and cost.

Most importantly, you understand that Crews Café is a community environment. You'll be working alongside staff and volunteers and serving people from all walks of life. You'll bring patience, respect and a genuine interest in the people and community around you.

You’ll also bring:

  • Demonstrated experience in a commercial kitchen, café or similar food service environment.
  • Confidence managing day-to-day operations within a small kitchen.
  • Fresh ideas and enthusiasm for menu development and improvement.
  • A current Food Safety Supervisor Certificate or willingness to obtain one.
  • A strong understanding of food safety, hygiene and safe kitchen practices.
  • Effectiveorganisationaland time management skills.
  • Reliability and flexibility across weekday shifts.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work positively with staff, volunteers and people from diverse backgrounds.
  • A genuine commitment to BCF's mission and values.
