Whelan Kartaway in Melbourne is seeking a Casual Multi-Skilled Driver / Waste Transfer Station Yard Hand. The role combines driving heavy vehicles with yard duties, maintenance checks and waste handling.

You will switch between tasks as required, ensuring safety and efficiency across operations. Casual hours vary, including potential weekend work, with on-site training and a supportive team environment.

Qualifications

• Holds a current Heavy Rigid (HR) driver’s licence.

Responsibilities

• Provide operational support when others are absent.
• Drive and operate MR and HR rear lift vehicles.
• Perform prestart maintenance checks on vehicles including truck washing.
• Assemble and maintain rear lift bins, including bin washing.
• Carry out hard waste collection.
• Assist with daily waste transfer station and yard operations.
• Sort, handle and move waste and materials.
• Collect and deliver company vehicles to servicing/repair facilities.
• General yard work, cleaning, housekeeping and site maintenance.
• Move between driving and yard duties as required by business needs.

Are you a hands-on all-rounder who is happy to roll up your sleeves and get stuck in?

We are looking for a reliable, flexible and hardworking Casual Multi-Skilled Driver / Waste Transfer Station Yard Hand to join our team.

This is a varied, hands‑on role supporting the day-to-day operations of our business. One day you might be driving a heavy rigid truck, the next assisting in the yard, performing prestart safety checks, bin checks and cleaning or collecting and delivering vehicles for servicing.

We need someone who enjoys variety, takes direction well and understands that being a valuable team member means doing whatever reasonable operational task is needed on the day.

About the role

Working under the direction of our operations team, your duties will include:

• Providing operational support when other team members are absent.
• Driving and operating both MR and HR rear lift vehicles.
• Prestart maintenance checks on vehicles including truck washing.
• Rear lift bin assembly and maintenance including bin washing.
• Hard waste collection.
• Assisting with daily waste transfer station and yard operations.
• Sorting, handling and moving waste and materials.
• Collecting and delivering company vehicles to and from servicing and repair facilities.
• General yard work, cleaning, housekeeping and site maintenance.

This is not a single-task driving position. You will be expected to move between driving and yard duties as directed, with work priorities determined by the needs of the business.

About you

To be successful in this role, you will be someone who:

• Holds a current Heavy Rigid (HR) driver's licence.
• Is reliable, punctual and takes their work responsibilities seriously.

• Experience in waste management, transport, logistics, construction, yard operations or general labouring will be highly regarded. Experience operating mobile plant is an advantage, provided the appropriate licences and competencies are held.

We need someone who is dependable, adaptable and willing to work where directed. This is not a role where you choose the tasks you prefer to perform; the day's priorities will be set by management to meet business requirements.
