Job summary

Walgett Shire Council is seeking safe, reliable minibus drivers to transport children and staff to activities across the Walgett Shire. The role includes assisting with youth programs when not driving and may involve lifeguard duties where qualified.

Shifts are term-time on Wednesdays and Fridays after 3:15 pm; during the Summer Youth Program (21 December 2026 – 3 February 2027) the schedule runs Wednesday to Sunday, 10:45 am to 5:15 pm, with a 30-minute unpaid break.

Qualifications

• A current Light Rigid licence or higher.
• A safe driving history.
• A current Working with Children Check clearance for paid employment.
• A current First Aid certificate, or willingness to obtain one before commencing.
• Good communication and customer service skills.
• The ability to engage respectfully with children, young people, families and community members.
• The ability to work independently, follow schedules and respond calmly to changing circumstances.

Responsibilities

• Safely operate Council’s minibus in accordance with routes, timetables and program requirements.
• Complete vehicle inspections and report defects or maintenance needs.
• Assist passengers to board and alight safely.
• Ensure seatbelts are worn and vehicle capacity is not exceeded.
• Promote safe and respectful behaviour while travelling.
• Maintain passenger manifests, trip records and vehicle documentation.
• Monitor weather and road conditions and respond accordingly.
• Keep the minibus clean, fueled and ready for use.
• Assist with loading and unloading of program equipment.
• Respond to breakdowns, accidents, illness and other incidents.
• Assist with youth, recreation, aquatic and community programs when not driving.
